Matthijs de Ligt has finally spoken out about his prolonged back injury at Manchester United, stating that he "done everything" in his efforts to return to the pitch before ultimately requiring season-ending surgery.
De Ligt has been absent from Manchester United's lineup since November. Over those six months, the club dismissed Ruben Amorim, parted ways with interim boss Darren Fletcher, and appear to be on the verge of permanently installing Michael Carrick as manager. The lack of public communication from United's coaching staff left De Ligt's recovery shrouded in mystery, with the player himself also staying largely quiet on the matter.
With only two matches left in the 2025–26 campaign, Manchester United confirmed that De Ligt had undergone "successful" surgery on a back problem that had plagued him for the better part of six months.
"Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football," De Ligt said on the club's official website.
"I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible."
What Injury Does Matthijs de Ligt Have?
De Ligt is dealing with a back injury for the first time in his senior career. The Dutch centre-back has previously suffered from foot, knee, calf, groin, shoulder, ankle and thigh complaints, along with illness, throughout a career marked by recurring fitness setbacks. However, his back had always remained trouble-free.
That changed dramatically just as De Ligt was hitting some of his finest form. The commanding centre-back featured for the full 90 minutes in each of United's opening 13 Premier League matches of the season, firmly establishing himself on the right side of Amorim's preferred back three.
After being named Manchester United's player of the month for November, De Ligt said: "Hopefully I can continue like this and, in the end, it's all about the end of the season." Ironically, that would prove to be the last action he saw all season.
When Could Matthijs de Ligt Return From Injury?

In late April, De Ligt was spotted back in individual training with Manchester United, sparking cautious optimism about a late-season comeback that could have helped him prepare for the 2026 World Cup. Those hopes were dashed by the surgery, with the Netherlands international confirming he will miss the summer tournament in North America.
The club's announcement regarding De Ligt's operation stated that the defender is "expected to return for United in the early stages of the 2026–27 season."
This development will also mean that De Ligt has begun every season of his senior career under a different manager than the one he had the previous year.
De Ligt's Managerial Curse
Season | Club | Manager at Season Start |
|---|---|---|
2016–17 | Ajax | Peter Bosz |
2017–18 | Ajax | Marcel Keizer |
2018–19 | Ajax | Erik ten Hag |
2019–20 | Juventus | Maurizio Sarri |
2020–21 | Juventus | Andrea Pirlo |
2021–22 | Juventus | Massimiliano Allegri |
2022–23 | Bayern Munich | Julian Nagelsmann |
2023–24 | Bayern Munich | Thomas Tuchel |
2024–25 | Man Utd | Erik ten Hag |
2025–26 | Man Utd | Ruben Amorim |
This update could also shape Manchester United's approach in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils have already handed Harry Maguire a one-year contract extension to bolster their defensive depth, and De Ligt's anticipated return may further persuade the club's recruitment staff to focus their spending on other positions across the pitch.
