Tempers flared on Wednesday evening in Chicago as Inter Miami midfielder Rodrigo De Paul and Chicago Fire striker Robert Lewandowski clashed in a fiery confrontation during the closing moments of their MLS encounter.
The mood at Soldier Field was already electric after both clubs exchanged goals on either side of the break. Lewandowski broke the deadlock with a stunning volley before Casemiro leveled matters with a header in the 47th minute.
Both teams pushed hard for a winner as time wound down, but neither could find a decisive goal in the 1–1 stalemate. There was, however, a jaw-dropping altercation between De Paul and Lewandowski. The latter became embroiled in a shoving match with Miami fullback Ian Fray before a set piece.
Lewandowski then stormed over to confront Fray a second time, only to be intercepted by a furious De Paul. The two former European stars shoved one another and exchanged heated words before teammates stepped in to separate them.
Within moments, the pair found themselves side by side once more, with De Paul continuing to fire words at a grinning Lewandowski, who ultimately laughed the whole thing off and refocused on the set piece.

No official statement was released regarding what was said between De Paul and Lewandowski on Wednesday night, but reports quickly surfaced suggesting the Argentine did what he was renowned for during his time at Atlético Madrid—provoke.
According to Spanish publication AS, De Paul reportedly said, "Who do you think you are, fool? I've won the Copa América and the World Cup. What have you won?"
If De Paul truly attempted to taunt Lewandowski with trophy talk, it was a daring gamble from the midfielder, who has just five honors to his name compared to the extensive collection of silverware the Polish star has accumulated.
Lewandowski may lack major international honors, but his club record speaks for itself. The prolific forward claimed the Bundesliga title 10 times across his spells at Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, along with 13 additional trophies from his time in Germany, including the 2019–20 Champions League crown.
The silverware kept coming after his move to Barcelona. Lewandowski secured a trio of La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles, as well as the Copa del Rey.
De Paul, by contrast, has claimed just one club trophy in his career—last season's MLS Cup with Inter Miami.
What's Next for Inter Miami, Chicago Fire?
With the MLS Cup playoffs just months away, both Miami and Chicago have placed themselves in strong positions to secure postseason berths. The Herons currently sit second in the Eastern Conference with 44 points from 24 matches.
The Fire sit two places below them in fourth, with 39 points and a game in hand.
Neither club has looked particularly convincing of late, however. Miami have managed just one victory in their last eight outings across all competitions, while Chicago are mired in a five-match winless streak.
Lionel Messi and his teammates would welcome a soft opponent to rediscover their form, but instead face Supporters' Shield leaders Nashville SC this weekend.
The challenge is no simpler for Lewandowski's Fire, who travel to face third-place New England Revolution on Sunday.
