De Paul Reveals Mind-Reading Connection with Messi as Inter Miami Contract Details Emerge
Rodrigo De Paul expressed his deep respect for Lionel Messi, as his move from Atlético Madrid to Inter Miami is now ready to be finalized.
De Paul will swap La Liga for Major League Soccer following four seasons in Spain, strengthening an Inter Miami squad that already features Sergio Busquets, Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba, alongside Messi.
"[Messi] isn't very talkative, but his behavior leads by example. When lunch is scheduled for 1 p.m., he arrives early. Without uttering a word, he establishes discipline," De Paul shared with Simplemente Futbol.
The 31-year-old midfielder also spoke about his playing connection with Messi, having been Argentina teammates since 2018. "At times we simply exchange glances and understand what's required to restructure the team. It streamlines the entire process," he explained.
Reports emerged that week indicating De Paul will initially move to Inter Miami via loan from Atlético, where a contract extension through 2027 will be activated to enable this transfer and a permanent sale in 2026. Miami will possess the right to exercise a $17 million buy-out clause, which would then activate a four-year deal.
This arrangement structure means De Paul won't need to occupy a Designated Player (DP) slot, as Miami's three positions are currently filled. Busquets might free up one spot when his deal expires at year's end, potentially allowing De Paul to claim it, though the Argentine emphasized that wages aren't his priority.
"At some stage I approached Racing saying, 'I simply want to compete in Copa Libertadores. You don't need to compensate me.' Money wasn't my motivation. I just desired to be somewhere I felt appreciated," the midfielder revealed.
"Often, it's not about financial considerations. It's about how a team treats you. When Udinese handed me the No. 10 jersey, the same number [club icon Antonio] Di Natale had worn, I sensed their confidence in me. That means more than any contract. I've put in the effort, naturally, but money doesn't drive me.
"I require feeling appreciated. That's my motivation."
