Deal Done! Arsenal Pocket Lucrative Fee as Surplus Winger Heads for the Exit

Arsenal's push to revamp their title-winning roster is best executed with urgency, though upgrading the squad also means parting ways with players who have served the club faithfully. Leandro Trossard fits that description, and Beşiktaş have reportedly "agreed" a deal for the Belgian winger.

Trossard featured in 50 matches last season as the Gunners claimed the Premier League title and advanced to the Champions League final. However, his exit — or alternatively that of fellow left winger Gabriel Martinelli — had seemed increasingly inevitable to create space for a superior and/or younger alternative.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal will offload Trossard for £17.1 million ($22.9 million). The bulk of that figure is a guaranteed payment, with £1.7 million ($2.3 million) coming in the form of conditional bonuses. The Gunners won't recover the £27 million spent on the player in January 2023, but it's a reasonable return for someone who delivered as much as he did ahead of his 32nd birthday.

Trossard, who is part of Belgium's World Cup squad set to face the U.S. men's national team on Monday in a quarterfinal berth decider, is reportedly in the process of finalizing personal terms. He had been earning approximately £4.7 million ($6.3 million) per season before signing a new deal last summer that included a "significant" pay increase, though it was not an extension of his previous contract through 2027.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion man is expected to earn £7.7 million ($10.3 million) annually in Türkiye, which may align with his current Arsenal salary following the recent pay bump.

Arsenal Make Room for New Winger

Morgan Rogers

Offloading Trossard has a clear purpose. If Arsenal are to build on their Premier League triumph — their first in 22 years — establish a dynasty, and finally conquer the Champions League, they will need higher-caliber players capable of making a consistent impact at the elite level.

The most coveted targets would be Bradley Barcola, who has been pushed to the periphery at Paris Saint-Germain, or Morgan Rogers, the standout talent at Aston Villa.

Recent reports indicate Villa will demand £130 million ($173.6 million) for Rogers, likely driven by Elliot Anderson's record-breaking £116 million ($154.9 million) move to Manchester City. Barcola should command a lower fee given PSG have shown he isn't a guaranteed starter, yet the reigning European champions are said to value the Frenchman above Anderson's price tag.

Rafael Leão represents a more financially viable option, with valuations for the AC Milan star beginning at £51 million ($68.1 million). The Portugal international, who turned 27 last month, may not be as long-term an investment, but he underscored his class with a breathtaking assist in his nation's World Cup victory over Croatia on Friday.

Marcus Rashford is another name in the mix. The Manchester United forward is said to be prioritizing a move overseas should he depart Old Trafford, and a switch to north London would also mean the Red Devils potentially strengthening a rival. The scenario echoes the unexpected sale of Danny Welbeck to the Gunners back in 2014.
