Dembele Destroys Liverpool With Double Strike as PSG Ruthlessly Knock Reds Out

There was no famous comeback at Anfield on Tuesday night, as Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League following a 4–0 aggregate loss to defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds needed to significantly improve on their first-leg performance at the Parc des Princes, but ultimately fell short on their own turf. Ousmane Dembélé's double sealed yet another 2–0 win for PSG, who endured a difficult 20-minute spell on Merseyside but emerged without conceding.

Stoppages for injuries disrupted the rhythm of a disjointed first half, and Liverpool were gaining the upper hand before Dembélé struck just after the hour.

Arne Slot will highlight the overturned penalty call involving Alexis Mac Allister as a potential turning point, but the Reds simply didn't do enough across both legs to progress at PSG's expense.

The Moment That Defined the Match

Ousmane Dembélé

Liverpool were noticeably better than in last week's first leg during the opening 45 minutes, but both sides appeared to struggle with the conditions. PSG failed to capitalise on several promising attacking situations, while the hosts were equally careless when opportunities arose on the counter.

Nevertheless, Liverpool emerged for the second half with clear intent to produce something extraordinary. The loss of Nuno Mendes appeared to significantly hamper the visitors, and Arne Slot's men sensed an opportunity.

Relentless waves of attacks were urged on by a believing Anfield crowd, but the determined hosts were denied by a commanding display from Matvey Safonov in goal, as well as their own hesitancy in front of the net.

PSG appeared content to sit back and hit on the break, needing just one moment in the second half to put the tie to bed. Dembélé's wastefulness in the first leg had kept Liverpool's hopes alive, and he spurned another big opportunity early on at Anfield. Yet the reigning Ballon d'Or holder delivered a clinical reminder of his exceptional quality, beating Giorgi Mamardashvili with a precise long-range finish.

With that, Liverpool's growing momentum evaporated. The energy was drained from the Kop in an instant.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs. PSG (4-2-3-1)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Giorgi Mamardashvili—5.5: PSG's continued wastefulness and Liverpool's second-half dominance meant the Georgian keeper faced limited pressure. His distribution was erratic on several occasions.

RB: Jeremie Frimpong—7.1: Engaged in a fierce battle with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for the first 45 minutes, holding his own throughout. The PSG winger occasionally outwitted Frimpong, but the Dutchman matched him for pace.

CB: Ibrahima Konaté—7.6: Got away with some questionable positional choices at times, but was largely outstanding. His physicality helped neutralise PSG's attacking threat, allowing Liverpool to sustain pressure in the second half.

CB: Virgil van Dijk—6.6: The skipper appeared composed for much of the second leg, asserting himself against PSG's attack far more effectively than in the first match.

LB: Milos Kerkez—7.6: His work rate was beyond reproach and he posed a consistent threat at the back post. Should have made more of his two clear opportunities after being caught on the wrong side of Achraf Hakimi.

DM: Ryan Gravenberch—6.9: Looked refreshed following his weekend rest and was the key driving force behind Liverpool's surge at the beginning of the second half. Came close on a couple of occasions with efforts from range.

DM: Dominik Szoboszlai—7.7: Showed a willingness to take responsibility but couldn't conjure the decisive moment that might have brought Liverpool back into contention.

AM: Alexis Mac Allister—5.9: Slot deployed him higher up the pitch to compensate for his limited defensive recovery, but Mac Allister struggled to find his footing early on. He picked up an unnecessary yellow card late in the first half, though he grew into a threat around the box after the break, winning a penalty that VAR correctly reversed.

AM: Florian Wirtz—7.0: A familiar Wirtz display that we've witnessed often this season. The German showed flashes of ingenuity, but never looked like taking the game by the scruff of the neck.

ST: Hugo Ekitiké—6.4: Looked lively in the early exchanges, but his night was ended prematurely by what appeared to be a serious Achilles injury.

ST: Alexander Isak—5.7: Had a minimal impact on his first start of the season, and his substitution at half-time was pre-planned.

SUB: Mohamed Salah (30' for Ekitiké)—6.6: Helped create two genuine opportunities and was heavily involved in play. Squandered possession too frequently.

SUB: Joe Gomez (46' for Frimpong)—6.9: His time on the pitch was brief.

SUB: Cody Gakpo (46' for Isak)—6.5: An encouraging introduction at the interval, but lacked the cutting edge needed inside PSG's penalty area.

SUB: Rio Ngumoha (67' for Gomez)—6.8: Showed some bright moments, but his influence waned as the match drew to a close.

SUB: Curtis Jones (74' for Salah)—6.2: Came on with the tie already effectively over.

Subs not used: Freddie Woodman (GK), Kornel Misciur (GK), Amara Nallo, Andy Robertson, Federico Chiesa, Curtis Jones, Trey Nyoni.
