Devastating Injury Threatens to Crush Mexico Star's 2026 World Cup Dreams

Mexican national team defender Jesús Orozco faces potential exclusion from the 2026 World Cup following an ankle dislocation sustained during the Liga MX Apertura 2025 semifinal match.

The injury occurred as Orozco attempted to assist Cruz Azul in their comeback effort against Tigres, extending his right leg to deflect a shot. Upon ball contact, his ankle twisted unnaturally as he fell, creating one of the most shocking injuries seen in Liga MX in recent years.

Several sources have verified Orozco's ankle dislocation, though concerns remain about additional ligament injury. In an optimal recovery scenario, Orozco might return within three to four months, but ligament damage could extend his absence to six months.

Cruz Azul head coach Nicolás Larcamón stated the team will await comprehensive medical evaluations before providing updates on recovery expectations.

Whatever the final diagnosis, Orozco faces an extended rehabilitation period, compelling both Cruz Azul and Mexico's national team under Javier Aguirre to seek replacement options.

Regardless of whether his recovery takes four or six months, Orozco now confronts a challenging timeline to prepare for the 2026 World Cup.

The 23-year-old defender had established himself as the primary alternative to Johan Vásquez in central defense over the past year. The tall defender excels with ball distribution and provided unique value as the sole left-footed center back in Aguirre's recent squads alongside Vásquez.

Aguirre must now identify alternative options to provide adequate coverage for Vásquez, as El Tri risks vulnerability should the Genoa skipper encounter injury problems. Other defensive players must demonstrate their worth in upcoming months since Aguirre cannot afford to delay decisions waiting for Orozco's complete rehabilitation.

Orozco joins other Mexico internationals who have suffered significant injuries threatening their 2026 World Cup participation, including Rodrigo Huescas and Luis Chávez, both sidelined with ACL injuries in recent months.

Orozco Addresses Injury Through Social Media

Following the Liga MX semifinal, Orozco used social media platforms to communicate about his condition.

"I'm deeply grateful for every message, expression of affection, and all the support received during these challenging hours," Orozco posted. "To my fellow players, coaching team, and everyone at Cruz Azul, thank you for your immediate assistance.

"I must also acknowledge the Tigres fans, who demonstrated remarkable class by giving me an unforgettable ovation as I departed the field.

"The journey ahead will be challenging, but I'm confident that with this incredible support system behind me, the recovery process will be more manageable and I'll emerge stronger. Until we meet again."
