Did Barcelona Just Steal the Greatest Deal of the Summer Transfer Window?

Barcelona have dominated La Liga in the opening month of their title defense, having cruised to retaining their championship with ease last season.

Fans spent much of the offseason anxious about Julián Alvarez's future at Atlético Madrid, with Barça reportedly submitting a bid worth $116.4 million (over €100 million) that went unanswered. Atléti were determined from the start that they would not sell their most valuable player to a bitter domestic rival, and remarkably, that position held firm despite Alvarez's frustration.

Just as it appeared Barcelona would head into the 2026–27 season without a striker, they made an unexpected move for Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus, securing the Brazilian for a relatively modest $11.6 million.

Jesus, however, has only featured in a limited capacity at the start of his time at Barça. Flick has opted for a fluid attacking line without a traditional No. 9. While Raphinha and Lamine Yamal continue to grab the spotlight, one nearly-overlooked summer signing has also made a significant impression: Karim Adeyemi.

Barcelona Supporters Cannot Believe How Good Karim Adeyemi Is

Karim Adeyemi departed Borussia Dortmund in the summer carrying a deep sense of unfulfilled potential. The German international was awarded Rookie of the Year in his first Bundesliga season (2022–23), but failed to build on that early promise.

Adeyemi struggled to find consistency and managed just seven goals in each of his last two league seasons at Dortmund, a club wrestling with its own identity issues. As a result, there was little protest when the German side approved his transfer to Barça for an initial $25.1 million.

Yet Flick is already working his magic with the 24-year-old. The Barcelona manager has something of a 'winger whisperer' quality, with his transformation of Raphinha in particular highlighting just how effectively Flick has been able to unlock his attackers since taking charge in Catalonia.

Adeyemi, who missed out on Julian Nagelsmann's World Cup squad, benefited from a full preseason with his new teammates, and while he's currently competing with fellow newcomer Anthony Gordon for a starting spot, his display in Wednesday's 7–2 thrashing of Racing Santander left supporters stunned. The German set up Lamine Yamal's late goal with a breathtaking solo run and finished with a match-high eight shots.

While not the most technically polished player, Adeyemi is an extraordinary physical specimen. Flick's embrace of high-energy chaos makes Adeyemi an ideal fit, and although the German has put his hand up for a starting role after the international break, he may prove most dangerous as an impact substitute against fatigued defenses.

Given his transfer fee, Barcelona must surely feel they've secured one of the greatest bargains of the summer window.

Hansi Flick Weighs in on Adeyemi's Impact

New arrivals Adeyemi and Gordon have not only helped Barcelona move on from their top summer target Alvarez, but have also played a part in a record-setting start to the campaign.

Adeyemi has scored three of Barça's 33 goals across seven matches in all competitions. The side's clinical edge in front of goal—only Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg boast a higher shot-conversion rate among Europe's top-five leagues—is the chief reason behind their perfect start heading into Saturday's potentially challenging away fixture at Sevilla.

Flick particularly appreciates what Gordon brings defensively, but he is equally aware that he has a dangerous weapon in Adeyemi.

"I am very happy with Karim Adeyemi! He is lightning fast," the Barcelona manager told reporters on Friday. "His performances make everything easier. I think he wasn't going through a good time in Germany, and it did him good to change scenery and move to another country. I'm very happy that he chose us."

The 24-year-old is delighted with his new surroundings, having described Barcelona as "the best club in the world" when he arrived in July.

His former club has enjoyed a promising start to their own season, but must be feeling some degree of seller's remorse. Jürgen Klopp has also taken note, calling Adeyemi up to Germany's squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.
