Donovan and Howard Reveal Which Two USMNT Stars Are Fighting for Their World Cup Lives
Former U.S. men's national team legends Tim Howard and Landon Donovan identified Sebastian Berhalter and Brenden Aaronson as players who could potentially be excluded from the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
Sebastian Berhalter strengthened his argument for USMNT inclusion following his goal and assist performance versus Uruguay. His set-piece expertise might prove to be a crucial asset for Mauricio Pochettino's tactical approach. However, despite this showing, both Howard and Donovan recognized that the Argentine manager might choose alternative options come next summer.
"Sebastian, in my opinion, deserves a spot on the squad ... but he's borderline," Howard stated on their Unfiltered Soccer podcast. "I'm also placing him in that uncertain category. He's borderline but leaning toward inclusion," Donovan agreed.
Matt Turner, even after being replaced by Matt Freese as the starter, remains in their projected squad and would likely function as a substitute goalkeeper if the competition began today.
Aaronson's Position Remains Uncertain
Leeds United's Brenden Aaronson was similarly categorized as borderline, though Howard showed some indecision. "I'm inclined to say borderline, but I believe he makes it. I have him included," Howard initially stated.
"You have him on the roster?" Donovan questioned.
"Actually, I'm placing him in the uncertain category now. You've convinced me otherwise with that simple question," Howard responded. To be fair to Howard, Aaronson represents one of the most challenging selection decisions currently.
During the Paraguay and Uruguay matches in November, he frequently found promising positions, but his finishing quality in crucial moments was lacking. The 25-year-old has managed only one goal across 12 Premier League appearances this campaign.
For the national squad, Aaronson found the net once during this year's Concacaf Gold Cup. Prior to that strike, his previous international goal occurred on September 13, 2023, during a friendly match against Oman. Considering the offensive options available to Pochettino, Aaronson will need to demonstrate his worth in upcoming opportunities.
