Dortmund's Financial Crisis Crushes Jadon Sancho's Dream Move

Borussia Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl has revealed that "internal" conversations took place regarding a potential third signing of Jadon Sancho during the summer transfer window—however, without "no state, no sheikh, no billionaire" supporting the club financially, such a move was economically unfeasible.
Dortmund's impressive late-season Bundesliga run secured unexpected Champions League qualification for 2025–26, along with the accompanying financial benefits. The club has welcomed six new signings to strengthen their roster.
With Sancho deemed surplus at Manchester United, Dortmund were among numerous clubs reportedly interested throughout the summer. Chelsea's choice to pay a penalty to avoid their purchase obligation from their loan deal created significant uncertainty, while Juventus, Napoli and Roma were also reportedly pursuing the player.
Aligning with the 25-year-old's United wages and persuading him to accept a reduced salary for a permanent transfer consistently presented obstacles.
Ultimately, Sancho joined Aston Villa on loan, a club owned by V Sports holding company—established and controlled by billionaires Nassef Sawiris and Wesley Edens. Villa will reportedly cover 80% of the winger's salary, and with loan fees and additional bonuses included, United anticipate recovering the remaining 20%.

Kehl: Dortmund Must Generate Their Own Revenue
"Naturally, we discussed this matter internally at some stage, but there needs to be a workable financial structure," Kehl explained to BILD, acknowledging that the required financial commitment was beyond Dortmund's willingness to pursue a formal bid.
He added, in what appeared to be a subtle criticism of Premier League's lavish spending: "Through our completed transfers, we have invested roughly €100 million (£86.7 million, $116.9 million) in new signings, comparable to last summer's outlay. However, we don't have a state, sheikh, or billionaire backing us. We must generate our own revenue and can only spend what we have previously earned over time. We have reached our financial limits for this transfer window."
Dortmund's expenditure included permanent acquisitions of Yan Couto, Daniel Svensson, Patrick Drewes, Carney Chukwuemeka and Fábio Silva, alongside Chelsea's Aaron Anselmino on loan. Approximately €81 million was recouped through outgoing transfer fees.
Dortmund was the club where Sancho established his reputation after departing Manchester City's youth system at 17 years old seeking better first-team opportunities.
He rejoined Dortmund on loan from Manchester United during the latter half of 2023–24, contributing to the club's Champions League campaign during an inconsistent period. Sancho spent the previous season at Chelsea but failed to reach agreement on personal terms for an extended stay.
