Eddie Howe Takes Charge: Here's How Man Utd Could Look Under Their New Boss

Manchester United are reportedly working on compiling an extensive list of candidates to replace embattled manager Michael Carrick.

Antonio Conte is among the high-profile names in contention, while reports indicate Julian Nagelsmann is gaining considerable backing from club executives. That said, some within the club would favour a manager with proven Premier League experience, which is where Eddie Howe enters the picture.

Howe, 48, has featured on the shortlist of virtually every major English club at some stage over the last ten years, having made a significant impact at Bournemouth before guiding Newcastle United into the Champions League. A manager who understands how to grind out results in the Premier League could prove to be the decisive factor.

Should United choose to part ways with Carrick and hand Howe the reins, here's a look at how he might line up his side.

Eddie Howe's Potential Man Utd XI

Lewis Hall

GK: Senne Lammens—United have no intention of moving on from Lammens, whose calm and assured presence between the sticks would make him a prized asset for any manager in world football.

RB: Jules Koundé—Strengthening the defence is expected to be United's top priority in the coming transfer windows. Howe will likely target a dynamic right back capable of pushing forward when the opportunity arises while also being comfortable stepping into a central defensive role. Given that Koundé, who has grown restless at Barcelona, is naturally a centre back, this option could prove to be an ideal fit.

CB: Leny Yoro—Howe has a preference for athletic centre backs who can cope with the demands of the modern game. Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are not particularly renowned for their pace, but Yoro, who is still adapting to English football, possesses the qualities to flourish under the former Newcastle manager.

CB: Castello Lukeba—With Lisandro Martínez widely anticipated to depart, a new left-sided centre back is a necessity. Micky van de Ven appears to be an ideal candidate but may come with too hefty a price tag, whereas RB Leipzig's Lukeba could be an attractive option for Howe. His profile aligns with what United would be seeking regardless of who occupies the dugout. A move for Newcastle's Dan Burn to bring added experience would not be surprising.

LB: Lewis Hall—Everything points in the same direction. United want Hall. Howe gave Hall his breakthrough opportunity at Newcastle. Appointing him would give United the most direct route to securing their preferred left back target.

DM: Kobbie Mainoo—Howe favours a midfielder capable of dictating the tempo, having initially relied on Bruno Guimarães in that role before Sandro Tonali's arrival at St James' Park. He should take an immediate liking to Mainoo.

Carlos Baleba

CM: Carlos Baleba—Howe places great value on box-to-box energy in midfield, making Baleba one of the first names he would pencil into his starting lineup. The summer arrival stands to gain as much as anyone in the squad from a potential Howe appointment.

CM: Bruno Fernandes—Fernandes may not fit the typical mould of a Howe player, but the former Newcastle boss would back his ability to get the best out of him. He brings genuine intensity to the midfield and would be afforded the freedom to push forward, rather than being confined to the deeper role in which he struggled under Ruben Amorim.

RW: Bryan Mbeumo—Mbeumo embodies the type of forward Howe favours, which is precisely why he pursued him for Newcastle in 2025. He is energetic and tenacious, willing to cover every blade of grass in service of the team. A clear step up from Jacob Murphy.

ST: Benjamin Šeško—Much like Mbeumo, Newcastle were in the running to sign Šeško last summer. Howe referred to them as "outstanding players" and would likely jump at the opportunity to finally work with both.

LW: Amad Diallo—Howe would have been delighted to reunite with Anthony Gordon, but his recent transfer to Barcelona has closed that door. He would greatly appreciate working with a player of Amad's natural flair and quickness in attack, though could comfortably turn to Marcus Rashford in the initial phase.
