Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has told the club he will be stepping down with immediate effect, according to reports.
A disappointing 2025–26 season, in which Newcastle slumped to 12th place following the sale of key striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool, triggered discussions between Howe and club officials earlier this summer, with all sides expressing a wish to carry on together.
Now, however, The Athletic reports that Howe has reversed his position and is poised to vacate his role shortly, drawing his five-year spell at the club to a close.
Matthias Jaissle, currently managing Saudi Pro League club and PIF-owned Al Ahli following a standout stint at Red Bull Salzburg, has been identified as Howe's successor.

Howe appeared to reaffirm his commitment to Newcastle just a few months back, but circumstances at St James' Park have shifted considerably since the end of last season.
According to Sky Sports News, much of Howe's original decision to stay was rooted in the expectation that a productive summer transfer window would be sufficient to push the side back into the Premier League's top four. While reinforcements have arrived, they have come at the cost of several key members of Howe's squad.
Anthony Gordon was offloaded to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali completed a lucrative move to Tottenham Hotspur. Considerable doubt also hangs over the future of skipper Bruno Guimarães, with Arsenal among those showing interest.
It is reported that Howe, whose squad has been strengthened by the additions of 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Touré, 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur and 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, harbors reservations about the quality of his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
A heavy 4–1 pre-season loss to Championship outfit Bristol City on Wednesday evening, while not particularly meaningful in the broader context, did little to lift Howe's spirits, and the club has opted to move in a new direction.
