Ederson Pushes Man Utd to Accelerate Hunt for Crucial Third Midfielder

Manchester United reviving a potential move for Éderson later in the summer window is now virtually out of the question after the ball-winning midfielder committed his future to Atalanta by signing a contract extension.

United were widely reported to have reached a full agreement to bring in Éderson, who won the Europa League in 2024, at the close of last season. Part of his appeal, beyond his combative playing style, was his contract status—which was set to run out in 2027.

That situation limited what Atalanta could reasonably demand on the market, and the Red Devils negotiated a £35 million ($47 million) agreement, padded with minor add-ons. However, the transfer stalled when Éderson was called up to Brazil's World Cup squad as an emergency injury cover. When the moment came to finalize things, a reported knee issue caused United to pull back.

Alternative moves for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans—players of a different mold in midfield—swiftly followed. Yet while there was speculation that the Éderson pursuit could be reopened as United continue working the transfer market, he has now officially tied himself to Atalanta.

The Serie A outfit have not disclosed the duration, but the "extension" at minimum dramatically increases Éderson's market value and strips away his previously accessible price tag.

Man Utd Still Need Éderson-Type Signing

Manchester United's midfield overhaul remains unfinished and could arguably stay that way until a high-energy, destructive presence arrives to complement the more technical qualities of Tielemans, Santos, and Kobbie Mainoo.

With the Éderson pursuit dead, Casemiro released upon contract expiry roughly three weeks ago, and Manuel Ugarte sidelined for an extended period, United are in need of a Casemiro-like figure to restore balance to the engine room.

Briefly, Aurélien Tchouaméni appeared to be an option before he signed a new deal to remain at Real Madrid. Reports also suggest Eduardo Camavinga is intent on staying at the Bernabéu despite a disappointing end to last season, making any pursuit of the Frenchman seem largely futile unless his position shifts.

The most logical option increasingly looks to be Carlos Baleba, given his established Premier League pedigree and a valuation that has dipped from its 2025 high. France and Roma midfielder Manu Koné represents another potential target, though securing either at a reasonable price will be crucial.
