Elche Takes On Barcelona: Key Matchup Breakdown, Bold Predictions, and Expected Lineups

Barcelona open their new La Liga season against Elche on Sunday as they look to begin the defense of their title on a winning note.

The 2026–27 season got underway last weekend, but La Blaugrana were granted additional preparation time owing to the delayed return of their World Cup players. This allowed them to fit in two further preseason friendlies, with victories over Basel 5–2 and Al Ahly 2–1 in the traditional Joan Gamper Trophy clash.

Hansi Flick will want an immediate strong showing from his squad, though he'll be missing several important players for the trip to the Estadio Martínez Valero. Elche will be eager to capitalize and follow up last Monday's 1–1 stalemate with Deportivo de A Coruña.

Los Franjiverdes have a poor record in this matchup, however, having gone without a win against Barça in any competition since 1974. The Catalan club claimed both meetings last season with a combined score of 6–2.

Barça Kick Off With Victory

Raphinha

Barça may not be operating at full capacity this weekend, particularly as key players return to match fitness, but they remain heavy favorites against an Elche side that narrowly avoided relegation by just a single point last campaign.

Although the club still lacks a proven center forward, the threat posed by Lamine Yamal and Raphinha on the flanks should prove too much for Elche, with new arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi ready to make an impact off the bench. That's without even factoring in the energetic Fermín López operating in the No. 10 position.

An inexperienced midfield double pivot and a modest defensive line will give Elche some hope of finding the net, but Barça should ultimately prove too strong for the hosts.

Prediction: Elche 1–3 Barcelona

Elche Predicted Lineup vs. Barcelona

Elche predicted lineup

Elche manager Martín Anselmi will be missing Yago Santiago and Adam Boayar for the team's second fixture of the season, with the 41-year-old expected to name a largely unchanged XI from the opening matchday.

Marc Aguado, who netted last Monday, will line up alongside Martim Neto in the central midfield area, with the pair shielding a deep-sitting back five.

Experienced goalkeeper Matías Dituro will need to produce a standout performance to keep Barça's numerous attacking threats at bay, while summer signing Fer Niño will need to be clinical at the opposite end.

Elche predicted lineup vs. Barcelona (5-4-1): Dituro; Sangaré, Affengruber, Redondo, Chust, Valera; Villar, Neto, Aguado, Houary; Niño.

Barcelona Predicted Lineup vs. Elche

Barcelona predicted lineup

Flick is without Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji through injury, while new addition Rodri was absent from Saturday's training session and will consequently miss the Elche fixture.

Teenagers Marc Bernal and Xavi Espart are candidates to start in central midfield in the absence of De Jong and Rodri, with Pedri and Gavi likely limited to bench roles as they continue building their fitness.

Cubarsí may also be left out of the starting XI for similar reasons, with the center-back pairing of Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martín set to continue after featuring regularly throughout preseason.

With limited attacking options, young forward Hamza Abdelkarim could earn a starting berth following an impressive preseason in which he scored four goals.

Barcelona predicted lineup vs. Elche (4-2-3-1): J. García; E. García, Christensen, Martín, Balde; Bernal, Espart; Yamal, López, Raphinha; Abdelkarim.
