Elite Center Back Reportedly Available to Real Madrid in Stunning Free Transfer Deal
Real Madrid have established themselves as masters of securing elite talent through free transfers.
Kylian Mbappé, David Alaba, Antonio Rüdiger and Trent Alexander-Arnold serve as prime examples of the exceptional deals Los Blancos have successfully executed. Currently, they might employ this same strategy to land Bayern Munich center-back Dayot Upamecano.
Upamecano is approaching the final year of his Bayern Munich deal and, per MARCA, the French defender's representative has already reached out to Real Madrid to explore potential interest for a summer 2026 transfer.
The report indicates that Real Madrid have different priorities and alternative targets to strengthen Xabi Alonso's roster, though they remain open to Upamecano's possible signing.
Los Blancos have similarly been connected with Upamecano's France international defensive partner, Liverpool's Ibrahima Konaté, who is also set to become available on a free transfer at the conclusion of the 2025–26 campaign.

Many believed Upamecano was destined for the Santiago Bernabéu four years prior, but Bayern Munich ultimately secured the defender following his breakthrough at RB Leipzig.
The French international experienced an uncertain beginning with the Bavarian club but has subsequently developed into a crucial component of Vincent Kompany's lineup. Now 26 years old, Upamecano has evolved into one of football's premier center-backs and boasts more than 150 matches for Bayern.
Considering ongoing injury concerns affecting Alaba, Rüdiger and Éder Militão, it's entirely reasonable that Real Madrid might investigate the center-back market this upcoming summer. Securing Upamecano without a transfer fee would represent excellent value, though obtaining Konaté on a free deal could prove even more advantageous.
Alonso will likely need to determine which French defender would be the optimal fit for his team heading into next summer.
