Emiliano Martínez's official move to Chelsea is poised to trigger a swift wave of changes at Stamford Bridge.
The former Aston Villa shot-stopper was officially presented on Sunday morning, just days after his availability was communicated to the Blues following Zion Suzuki's arrival in Birmingham. In a deal believed to be worth around $10.2 million (£7.5 million at the time of agreement), Martínez has signed a two-year deal with the option to extend by a third year.
This puts Chelsea's current No. 1, Robert Sánchez, in an uncomfortable position. The Guardian reported that the Spanish goalkeeper has already attracted interest from clubs in England, Europe, and Saudi Arabia ahead of what many anticipate will be a swift departure. Highly regarded prospect Mike Penders is expected to retain his role as the club's second-choice goalkeeper.
Earlier this month, Xabi Alonso described himself as "very happy with Rob." Now Sánchez faces the prospect of becoming the club's third-choice option unless he can secure a move before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Shortly after the official announcement, Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill reported that Martínez had been registered in time to potentially make his debut in Sunday's Premier League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Whether Alonso will throw his new No. 1 straight into action remains to be seen, though Sánchez would undoubtedly find himself in a difficult spot if forced to start. Unlike any other position on the pitch, the signing of a new goalkeeper immediately pushes the incumbent to the bench.
Chelsea then face Martínez's former club Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday, Sept. 6 in what promises to be a fascinating encounter.

Martínez touched down in west London with ambitious aspirations of adding to his already impressive trophy haul.

After breaking into Arsenal's starting lineup during the Gunners' run to the 2020 FA Cup triumph, Martínez has accumulated an extraordinary collection of silverware. The reigning Europa League champion with Aston Villa has also claimed two Copa América titles with Argentina along with the 2022 World Cup. His country fell short of repeating that success in North America this summer, though Martínez recorded more saves than any goalkeeper in World Cup final history in a narrow defeat to Spain—all while playing through a fractured finger.
Martinez Not the Perfect Solution to Problem Position
Chelsea have been searching for a dependable No. 1 ever since Thibaut Courtois departed for Real Madrid in 2018. Sánchez had managed to earn the trust of several Chelsea managers despite never fully convincing an anxious home crowd. In the Blues' season opener, the Spanish goalkeeper reinforced his uncertain reputation with a disastrous performance against Fulham.
Alonso has been strongly backed in a transfer window that has departed from Chelsea's previous approach. Martínez, 33, joins Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson as notably experienced additions to an otherwise very young squad.
While the former Yashin Trophy recipient has been hailed as the definitive answer to Chelsea's goalkeeping troubles, Martínez is not entirely free from costly errors himself. Since Sánchez joined the Blues in 2023, he has made eight mistakes leading to Premier League goals—over the same period, Martínez has been responsible for six such errors.
