England Boss Takes a Subtle Dig at Arteta Over Declan Rice in Pointed Remark

England head coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that Arsenal's wave of international withdrawals might appear "suspicious" to outside observers, but expressed greater concern over how Mikel Arteta has been managing the long-term wellbeing of Declan Rice.

Rice linked up with the England squad alongside Arsenal teammates Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke. Madueke suffered a knee injury following a heavy challenge in the opening half of Friday's friendly against Uruguay, while Rice and Saka both returned to north London after undergoing medical evaluations without featuring for England.

Tuchel was eager to stand up for Rice and Saka, who had faced accusations of avoiding their international responsibilities. Instead, the former Chelsea manager turned his attention toward Arteta.

"They arrived carrying injuries," Tuchel revealed. "We were already aware after the [Carabao Cup] final that there were problems."

The England boss shrugged that it was ultimately Arsenal and Arteta's call to "decide for themselves how much risk they're taking" by fielding Rice in his current state. "I'm not willing to take this risk with my key player," Tuchel pointedly stated.

"He's been feeling discomfort for quite some time," Tuchel said of Rice, "and he keeps playing through it, and he's now at a point where he's asking himself, 'Is this really worth it, what I'm doing, pushing through at 70% and constantly pushing myself?' And the same applies to Bukayo."

Arteta clearly has no hesitation when it comes to pushing his players to their absolute limits.

Rice has started 29 of Arsenal's 30 Premier League fixtures this season, only sitting out the 4–1 victory over Aston Villa in December due to a swollen knee. Just four days later, the dynamic midfielder declared himself fit to start against Bournemouth, netting twice in a 3–2 win.

"Declan Rice was struggling in the days leading up to that game," Arteta admitted, "but he pushed and pushed and pushed and made himself available. He played 96 minutes, scored two goals and was one of the standout performers on the pitch. That is the mentality we need from everyone." It's not, however, the mentality Tuchel endorses.

Tuchel: 'Everyone Can Do the Math'

Arsenal's English contingent represents only a portion of the sweeping international withdrawals that have seen players return to north London this month. The total number of pullouts has reached double figures, leading many to suggest the Premier League title contenders are placing club ambitions above international commitments.

"Everyone can do the math and it's a lot of players, of course, and in this context, it does look a little suspicious," Tuchel conceded. "But I can only speak about our players."

Regarding Rice and Saka specifically, the England manager was emphatic in highlighting their dedication. "They both showed up," Tuchel explained. "Declan was even out on the training pitch. He didn't come and say, 'Guys, I'm heading home.' I've heard of [international] camps where players didn't even arrive with their boots. That's a different story.

"But they both came. Bukayo did gym sessions, then another gym session, genuinely trying. Declan trained with Jude [Bellingham] on the pitch, gave it a go, and said 'it just doesn't feel right.' Why would I push him? What would we actually gain from that?

"Declan is a key player, Bukayo is a key player — why would I take that risk? Of course I want them in my squad, of course I want them playing tomorrow. But this simply isn't the right moment to push them. And on top of that, I have complete trust in both of them."

"I understand how it looks," Tuchel added. "I still have full confidence in the honesty of Bukayo and Declan. We ran medical tests. I saw the results. I have no reason to doubt that Declan is being straight with me, and no reason to doubt Bukayo either. But given the sheer number of [withdrawn] Arsenal players, I understand the perception."

Noni Madueke Faces Champions League Setback—Report

Noni Madueke

Madueke's commitment has never been in doubt. The lively winger was brought down by a fierce challenge and departed Wembley Stadium wearing a knee brace. Tuchel suggested the images looked more alarming than the actual extent of the injury.

"He actually got fortunate that it wasn't worse," the 52-year-old reflected. "He'll be out for a few days, possibly a few weeks, but it could have been far more serious. It was a real collision."

This recovery timeline still raises questions over Madueke's availability for Arsenal's upcoming fixtures. The Athletic reports that the summer signing is "likely" to miss Saturday's FA Cup quarterfinal against Southampton and is "a doubt" for next week's Champions League round of 16 clash with Sporting CP in Lisbon.

Should Saka remain unavailable alongside Madueke, Arteta may once again need to call upon record-breaking teenager Max Dowman. The 16-year-old made a decisive impact against Everton in mid-March but was surprisingly left out as Arsenal fell short in the Carabao Cup final.
