England, considered among the frontrunners for the 2026 World Cup, has suffered a significant blow with Tino Livramento being ruled out of the competition through injury.
Tuchel's 26-man squad selection drew considerable attention, and Livramento's place in it was always a risk, given that he had only just returned from a thigh injury that had sidelined him for two months. Nevertheless, the Newcastle United defender has long been a favorite of the German coach, going back to when Livramento was coming through the Chelsea academy during Tuchel's tenure as first-team manager.
It's clear that Tuchel values flexibility at fullback, and Livramento is comfortable operating on either side. Four of his five England appearances have come under the current setup, and he was set to make his World Cup debut in North America this summer.
Unfortunately, injury problems have struck the 23-year-old once more. Since bouncing back from an ACL injury in May 2023, Livramento has endured a difficult run with fitness. Prior to picking up a thigh problem earlier this year, the defender had also missed a significant portion of 2025–26 with a hamstring issue.
England Call-Up Trevoh Chalobah to Replace Tino Livramento

The Telegraph reported that the defender will be absent from the World Cup after sustaining a calf injury during a Sunday training session. Livramento is anticipated to be out for around six weeks, meaning his 2026–27 campaign with the Magpies should remain largely unaffected.
England has also confirmed that Livramento's vacancy in Tuchel's squad will not be filled by a natural fullback, but instead by Trevoh Chalobah.
Part of the official statement read: "Arrangements are now being made for the Chelsea defender to make the journey to the team's basecamp in Kansas City, while the rest of the squad will head to Dallas, Texas for the Three Lions' opening group fixture against Croatia on Wednesday."
Chalobah will therefore not feature in England's opening match of the tournament.
Many had anticipated that Tuchel might turn to Trent Alexander-Arnold following Livramento's withdrawal, with the Real Madrid right back having been left out of the original selection. However, the manager has chosen another center back as cover instead. This leaves England leaning heavily on the injury-prone Reece James, even though the likes of Ezri Konsa and Jarell Quansah can fill in at fullback. Djed Spence is also part of the squad.
Why England Can Replace Tino Livramento After Injury

One positive aspect of Livramento's unfortunate setback is that the injury occurred early enough to allow England to bring in a replacement.
FIFA's rules allow teams to substitute an injured outfield player up to 24 hours before their opening game.
With England drawn in Group L, their World Cup campaign doesn't begin until Wednesday, nearly a week after the tournament's first of three opening ceremonies held in Mexico City.
