Chelsea's midfield star Enzo Fernández has openly criticized the club's choice to dismiss former head coach Enzo Maresca, stating the decision "damaged" the squad.
Fernández's position at Chelsea has become uncertain following Maresca's departure in January, as the midfielder was believed to have a strong relationship with the coach. He sparked further speculation in a recent media appearance before later reaffirming his loyalty to Chelsea.
Nevertheless, a fresh interview with TUDN has put Fernández back in the spotlight, where he spoke candidly about his views on the mid-season managerial change.
"I can't comprehend it either," Fernández admitted. "There are occasions when we as players cannot grasp how and why they attempt to handle certain situations.
"Clearly, it was an exit that caused us significant pain because we possessed a clear philosophy. He provided us with structure, even though, as football goes, there are ups and downs.
"But he consistently maintained a distinct approach to training and matches, and his departure obviously caused us great distress, particularly mid-season when it disrupts everything."
What Fresh Fernández Comments Mean for His Chelsea Future
Possible problems with how Chelsea management conducts business only compound the growing list of concerns troubling Fernández lately.
From a sporting perspective, there are clear anxieties about the team's trajectory, following their embarrassing Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and their precarious position regarding qualification for next season's competition.
Reports have also emerged of stalled contract negotiations. Under their salary framework, which caps base wages while offering performance incentives, Chelsea seeks to enhance Fernández's guaranteed pay on his deal running through 2032, though no accord has been finalized.
Additionally, Fernández has expressed dissatisfaction with Chelsea's administrative decisions, emphasizing that Maresca's unexpected removal for non-performance reasons has troubled the players.
This doesn't necessarily indicate a summer departure is certain, and Fernández's lengthy contract provides Chelsea with security, but his discontent could create significant challenges for the club during the transfer window.
Chelsea Fans Ramp Up Protests Against Ownership
Concerns regarding Chelsea's corporate governance have been prevalent throughout this campaign. Supporters have already demonstrated against the ownership, with much of the anger stemming from Maresca's dismissal, which occurred after the Italian disagreed with executives over their team management philosophy.
Supporters have cited an ineffective, costly recruitment policy and minimal on-field improvement to support their grievances, and supporter organization NotAProjectCFC has announced their next protest phase.
On April 18, prior to the Manchester United fixture, the group plans to host supporters from Strasbourg, the other BlueCo-controlled club whose demonstrations have been ongoing much longer, to unite against the ownership.
"Due to the ongoing deterioration of principles at both football institutions, we have chosen to unite and act with one clear, collective message: Blueco Out," their statement declared.
"We aim to highlight not just the incompetence and poor management at Chelsea, but also the limitations imposed by multi-club ownership, where teams like Strasbourg lose their unique character, and where established and respected supporter groups face censorship and oppression from authoritarian ownership.
"We believe this represents a pivotal moment in football history, where supporters from clubs in different nations will unite to do what's right not just for our individual teams, but for the sport as a whole. United we can drive transformation."
