Enzo Fernandez Rises to the Occasion in Surprise Man City Debut — Here's How He Performed

Just four days after completing his high-profile move from Chelsea to Manchester City, midfielder Enzo Fernández made his debut in a sky blue jersey on Saturday.

It has been a turbulent summer for Fernández. The Argentine began the transfer window courting Real Madrid only to be publicly snubbed, received a red card in the 2026 World Cup final, was dropped by Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, and then linked up again with Enzo Maresca at City in a deal valued at $169 million (£125 million).

Fernández departed Stamford Bridge after 170 appearances for the Blues, keen to begin a fresh chapter of his career in Manchester. Maresca had initially named the 25-year-old among the substitutes, but a pre-match injury to Nico O'Reilly during warm-ups forced the Italian manager to throw his new recruit straight into his 4-1-4-1 setup.

The standout moment of Fernández's debut arrived in the build-up to Erling Haaland's goal in the 26th minute. The 25-year-old collected the ball at right midfield and immediately drove forward. He then released Antoine Semenyo down the right flank with a superb delivery that the winger played first-time into the box.

Who else but Haaland to meet the cross and head home City's opener? Semenyo was credited with the assist, but it was Fernández's incisive ball forward that sparked the entire sequence.

Fernández believed he had registered his first-ever goal contribution for City in the 58th minute. With his back to Haaland and facing away from goal, the Argentine cleverly flicked the ball across the goalmouth and directly onto the striker's left foot.

Haaland comfortably converted the brilliant move, but the offside flag swiftly ruled out the No. 9's second goal of the match and, with it, Fernández's first assist in a sky blue shirt. The midfielder also laid the ball on a plate for Rayan Cherki, whose effort cannoned off the woodwork.

The highlight-reel moments defined Fernández's debut, yet there were other understated contributions that hinted at how influential he can become for City. He completed eight passes into the final third, twice as many as Cherki managed. Fernández also made five line-breaking passes, more than any other player in Maresca's attack.

It should be noted that Fernández faced limited defensive demands against a winless Coventry side, but he still contributed when called upon, making clean tackles and key recoveries without committing a single foul across his 76 minutes on the pitch.

Naturally, there were a few moments Fernández will want to forget. He capped a promising City attack with a wildly skied effort from the edge of the box in the 42nd minute. The former Chelsea man was also beaten by a dribble in a moment that could have proved costly against stronger opposition.

On the whole, however, it was a solid and encouraging debut from Fernandez — one that hints at far greater things to come once he fully settles into his new surroundings.

Maresca Reacts to Fernadez's Debut

Following the victory, Maresca shed light on his original decision to name Fernandez among the substitutes on Saturday.

"The reason why Enzo was on the bench was just because he arrived two days ago," the manager explained in his post-match press conference. "I know how frustrating it has been for Enzo the last two, three weeks, so the idea was to give him some minutes, but at the end he played from the start.

"I think it was quite good and I'm happy also with his performance."

City remain unbeaten to open the 2026–27 Premier League season and must now shift their focus to the Champions League, where they face Porto on Tuesday before a highly anticipated trip to Old Trafford for the opening Manchester derby of the campaign on Sunday, Sept. 13.
