Manchester City have announced the acquisition of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea, bringing the 25-year-old midfielder back together with his former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.
The Citizens struck a deal worth $169 million (£125 million) for the Argentine, excluding add-ons, which equals the current Premier League transfer record established by Alexander Isak last summer when he moved from Newcastle United to Liverpool. Only Paris Saint-Germain's dual signings of Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé have ever surpassed that figure across any competition.
The transfer brings to a close a six-month saga that included an internal suspension, interest from multiple clubs, an ultimatum, and a barrage of jeers from supporters at Stamford Bridge.
It all started back in March, when Chelsea's vice-captain openly courted Real Madrid, making comments about his future that earned him a two-match ban. "A line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build," then-manager Liam Rosenior said at the time.
Speculation continued to mount from there, gathering pace after Chelsea failed to secure European football and again following Fernández's deep run with Argentina to the 2026 World Cup final.

The midfielder's eagerness to link up with Maresca once more became crystal clear, prompting Chelsea to issue a firm ultimatum to Man City: submit a bid of $162.1 million (£120 million) by August 14 at 5 p.m. BST (12 p.m. ET, 9 a.m. PT), or the deal was off.
The deadline passed, however, without any offer from the blue half of Manchester, leaving Fernández's situation unresolved. The player came on as a substitute in a friendly against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge the following day, only to be met with a wave of whistles. He received the same hostile reception in the opening Premier League fixture at Fulham.
Chelsea eventually permitted negotiations with City to resume, subsequently leaving Fernández out of the squad for the recent Carabao Cup clash against Luton Town and the league encounter against Brighton and Hove Albion. Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso made clear he "needed" players who were completely "focused."
Fernández faced two paths: either stay at Chelsea and attempt to mend a deeply damaged relationship, or move on, reunite with a trusted manager, and become a key figure in City's midfield overhaul — not to mention competing in the Champions League.
Fernández will be satisfied with his decision, particularly given how long he had been eyeing the exit. Chelsea, however, will feel especially aggrieved — not only did they lose the Argentine, but they also missed out on his intended replacement Lamine Camara after Monaco withdrew from the agreement at the last moment.

Fernández becomes the only player in history to command two transfer fees exceeding $135 million (£100 million). He joined Chelsea from Benfica for a remarkable $131 million (£106 million) in January 2023, just weeks after lifting the World Cup. That deal broke the British transfer record at the time — a milestone he has now matched once more three years on, alongside Isak.
His latest move is also significant for two additional reasons. Not only does Fernández's departure represent Chelsea's largest sale since Eden Hazard's move to Real Madrid in 2019 — a fee of around $116 million (£88.5 million) before substantial add-ons — but it also takes the club's total player sales this summer to $575 million (£425 million), comfortably eclipsing last season's record of $405.5 million (£300 million).
Fernández joins fellow high-profile signings Elliot Anderson ($153 million, £116 million) and Ayyoub Bouaddi ($117 million, £86 million) in the engine room, forming a new midfield trio valued at a staggering $439 million (£327 million).

Despite his eagerness to leave, the farewell was no less emotional for Fernández.
"I want you to know that these have not been easy days for me. Writing this is not easy either. The truth is, I haven't been in a good place," Fernández wrote on Instagram on Tuesday evening.
"Three years ago, Cobham and Stamford Bridge became home for me and my family. I grew attached to the people, to the shirt and to the badge of this incredible club."
The Argentine also acknowledged the anger and sense of betrayal that Chelsea supporters had come to feel toward him. "I live football the same way I live my life: with passion and with all my heart. That is why I want you to know that I understand you. I truly understand you, from the bottom of my heart ... I know how passionate you are, because I am the same. And if I were in your position, I would probably be thinking the same way."
He departed west London without bitterness. "You will always be in my heart, Blues. I will always wish you, always, nothing but the very best."
