Enzo Fernandez Set to Reclaim Chelsea Captaincy Despite Controversial Exile

Enzo Fernandez Set to Reclaim Chelsea Captaincy Despite Controversial Exile

Enzo Fernández is reportedly set to retain the Chelsea captaincy as one of the squad's "alpha" figures, despite facing internal punishment from the club after appearing to openly pursue a transfer to Real Madrid.

Without directly committing to a departure from Chelsea, Fernández raised enough questions about his loyalty to the west London club to warrant an internal sanction. Having been left out of Saturday's FA Cup demolition of Port Vale, the Argentine international is also expected to sit out this weekend's pivotal Premier League encounter with Manchester City. As Liam Rosenior emphasized on multiple occasions, Fernández had "crossed the line."

Nevertheless, Rosenior has been eager to avoid any long-term strain on his personal rapport with Fernández. The Chelsea boss maintained that "things aren't what people maybe think they are" and is preparing to welcome his key midfielder back with open arms for the club's next fixture—a high-profile showdown with Manchester United.

With club captain Reece James still absent through injury, Fernández is still anticipated to wear the armband upon his return to the pitch, according to The Guardian. The 25-year-old "remains part of the leadership group" and is among the most outspoken and assertive personalities within the Premier League's youngest squad.

This could be seen as a bold call from Rosenior. The notion of Fernández being immediately reinstated as the squad's figurehead in James's absence is not without its critics. The Athletic cites one source who felt the need to clarify that Fernández is simply "one of several co-captains" rather than the "formal vice-captain."

Palmer Set to Lose Armband Against Former Club

Cole Palmer running out as Chelsea captain.

One point of agreement between both reports is that Cole Palmer will not lead Chelsea as captain against Manchester City on Sunday. The former City academy product wore the armband for the very first time in his career during last weekend's 7–0 rout of Port Vale and clearly savored the occasion.

"It was a proud moment being captain," Palmer said. "I enjoyed it and it was a good afternoon."

The England international called the honor "a long time coming," yet it may be taken away just as quickly. Several outlets anticipate Moisés Caicedo to assume the captaincy against City. The 24-year-old has already skippered Chelsea twice this season—both occasions coming in cup ties against lower-league sides—and is considered to rank higher in the captaincy pecking order than Palmer.

Whether he will hold onto the armband ahead of Fernández for the Manchester United fixture is an entirely separate question—one that also hinges on Caicedo avoiding a 10th yellow card of the season against City, which would trigger a suspension.

Fernandez 'Remains Keen' on Chelsea Exit

Enzo Fernández

Fernández's hold on the captaincy for the rest of the season is one concern, but his long-term future as a Chelsea player is a far more complicated matter. While Marc Cucurella was reassured by conversations with club leadership about the club's direction—explaining why he escaped punishment despite similarly candid remarks—Fernández is believed to "remain keen" on a switch to Real Madrid, per BBC Sport.

Madrid's position in the matter is less straightforward. The same report places Fernández's transfer valuation at a substantial $133.2 million (£100 million), a figure that may well exceed what the Spanish giants are willing to spend.

Fernández's firm stance appears to center on a question of worth. Contract extension talks on improved terms at Chelsea have hit a wall, with the midfielder's agent Javier Pastore recently stating that his client "deserves much more than he's currently earning."

"Our plan after the World Cup is to meet with Chelsea again and, if there is no agreement, to explore other options," the representative ominously declared.
