Enzo Fernandez's Next Move: Ranking the Five Most Likely Landing Spots After His Shocking Transfer Confession
Unfortunate Liam Rosenior has experienced quite an unusual week leading Chelsea. The last thing he required following the Blues' disappointing Champions League exit was for Enzo Fernández to cast doubt on his future commitment to the club.
But Chelsea's vice-captain simply couldn't resist.
Fernández, a $142 million acquisition from Benfica in 2023, has matured significantly over the past 18 months. In a setting where player transactions take precedence and BlueCo's ultimate objectives remain unclear, he appeared to be establishing himself as a reliable cornerstone of this Chelsea squad.
Nevertheless, the Argentine is now setting the stage for a possible exit. Following Tuesday's 3–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, the former Benfica player stated he's uncertain about remaining at Chelsea next season.
This might simply be a strategic maneuver to secure a more profitable contract with the Blues, but Fernández has undoubtedly opened possibilities for transfer speculation. Here are five potential destinations that could pursue his signature this summer, ranked by likelihood and tactical compatibility.
5. Manchester City

Following Fernández's statements, Manchester City emerged among the clubs potentially interested in the midfielder this summer.
Although Fernández excels as a passer with attacking instincts reminiscent of prime İlkay Gündoğan, City have already begun their midfield reconstruction after losing David Silva, Gündoğan and Kevin De Bruyne in recent seasons.
Nico González arrived last January to support Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, while Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki joined during the summer to add more dynamism and creativity.
Though City may eventually need a Bernardo Silva successor, they're unlikely to invest heavily in Fernández this summer. However, this possibility could grow if Pep Guardiola leaves after a decade and Enzo Maresca takes over, having previously maximized Chelsea's No. 8's potential during his time at Stamford Bridge.
4. Atlético Madrid

Diego Simeone will remain in the Spanish capital as long as he wishes, and few players embody Atlético Madrid like Enzo Fernández. Perhaps only Tottenham's Cristian Romero comes close.
Atléti aren't quite the physical powerhouse they once were, which would benefit Fernández, who's celebrated more for his technical excellence than any aggressive tendencies. Though he'd certainly embrace some Simeone tactical cunning.
Despite his progress since the 2024–25 season began, Fernández has always appeared better suited to European football, and he could undoubtedly flourish in La Liga's more measured pace. However, Simeone's 4-4-2 formation might not optimize the Argentine's abilities, as he's performed best as a supporting No. 10 in west London.
Additionally, questions remain whether Atléti would invest such significant funds for a player in a position where they have adequate depth. Finding Antoine Griezmann's successor should be their main focus.
3. Al Hilal

The Public Investment Fund-backed Saudi clubs undoubtedly possess the financial resources to tempt Chelsea if Fernández demanded a transfer at season's end.
Al Hilal appears most likely among the four teams to make a significant midfield investment, despite recently extending Portugal international Rúben Neves' contract.
They're Saudi Arabian football's most accomplished club, but face the prospect of losing the league title to Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr this season. Should Ronaldo claim the Saudi Pro League crown, expect Al Hilal to respond aggressively in the transfer window.
The available resources make this move more feasible than some alternatives, but early signs suggest 25-year-old Fernández isn't interested in relocating to the Middle East at this career stage.
2. Paris Saint-Germain

Fernández's Tuesday evening remarks may have emerged after the Argentine witnessed Paris Saint-Germain's dominance firsthand and thought: Me apetece un poco de eso (I fancy some of that).
The Champions League titleholders currently miss midfield star Fabián Ruiz due to injury, but Warren Zaïre-Emery has capably stepped in alongside the brilliant Vitinha and versatile João Neves.
Therefore, acquiring Fernández would seem like strengthening an already strong position. Spanish reports even suggest Luis Enrique is eager to reunite, considering him ideal for his playing philosophy.
Theoretically, Fernández should excel in a possession-heavy system given his ball-handling skills, but the midfielder has notable weaknesses. He remains poor at tracking back and struggles defensively overall.
He's hardly lazy and shows decent work rate, having improved his conditioning considerably in the Premier League, but he'd represent a significant defensive downgrade compared to what Fabián, for instance, contributes.
1. Real Madrid

Real Madrid have excelled in the free transfer market recently, reducing their major spending sprees.
Los Blancos will likely explore free agent opportunities this summer, but many anticipate a substantial midfield investment. While Aurelién Tchouaméni has improved this season, they haven't properly replaced Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić.
No midfielders joined last summer.
Como standout Nico Paz will return at season's end, while Arda Güler has demonstrated he can provide Madrid midfield stability occasionally, but not yet in crucial matches. There's optimism surrounding emerging talent Thiago Pitarch, who appears to be a tenacious competitor and skilled technician rather than a creative mastermind.
With Eduardo Camavinga potentially leaving, space may exist for one major midfield addition.
Whether Madrid would pay a record transfer fee for a player not yet considered a genuine superstar remains questionable, but a move to the Santiago Bernabéu is likely what Fernández would prefer.
