Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca appears to have urged patience and careful reflection following reports that his former club Manchester City has been found guilty of over 100 violations of the Premier League's financial rules.
Maresca served as Pep Guardiola's deputy when City were initially charged by the Premier League back in February 2023. The Italian tactician has since departed the club, claimed three titles with Leicester City and Chelsea before stepping into a managerial role that has now become considerably more pressurized.
No formal verdict has been officially announced, and an appeals process remains available to City, but the club faces the prospect of severe consequences, with substantial points deductions and retroactive sanctions being a genuine possibility.
Reports indicate that Premier League clubs were informed of the ruling a day before it was published across the English media. An hour prior to the first story breaking, Maresca took to social media to share a thought-provoking post (in a rather literal sense).
"Time to breathe. Time to analyse. Time to learn," was the message posted by City's manager alongside a photo of his bare feet.
The collection of images also featured a shot of a swimming pool, a laptop resting on a chair, Maresca in conversation around a glass table, and a quote credited to the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates: "The only thing I know is that I know nothing."
It read as a deliberate statement at a moment when the world seems to have suddenly turned against City.
What Next for Maresca, Man City?
As the news has emerged during the opening international break of the club season, City's representatives are under no pressure to address the media until the Premier League resumes in the second weekend of October.
The club has already issued a prompt denial of the reports, maintaining that nothing has fundamentally changed while an official verdict has yet to be delivered.
"The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality," a spokesperson stated. "As such Manchester City FC's position remains consistent with the club's statement of February 2023.
"The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence."
City's players, however, remain exposed to media scrutiny. Maresca's squad is dispersed across every corner of the globe during this international break, where every match will be surrounded by questions from reporters. There will be only one subject on everyone's lips.
Man City's Appeal Process
Should the official announcement be made, City would be widely expected to challenge the decision, further prolonging Maresca's period of careful deliberation.
City have already invested millions in their legal defense, with their barrister Lord Pannick KC reportedly charging £5,000 ($6,600) per hour. At this stage, there is nothing to be gained from conceding defeat.
Given the extraordinarily drawn-out nature of the case itself, it is impossible to forecast how lengthy an appeals process might be, or what the final outcome could look like. City were previously banned from UEFA competitions for comparable offenses in 2020 but successfully overturned that ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), largely on the grounds that many of the charges fell outside the statute of limitations.
No such time-based provision exists within the Premier League's rulebook, and City cannot escalate this particular matter to CAS should their appeal to the independent commission also be rejected.
