Enzo Maresca Drops Bombshell as Chelsea Future Hangs in the Balance

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca disclosed that he hasn't had any communication with club officials since delivering a mysterious statement that seemed directed at the leadership in west London.

Following Saturday's comfortable 1–0 win against Everton, Maresca dramatically stated that he had endured the "worst 48 hours" of his time at Chelsea "because many people didn't support us."

The Italian manager defiantly declined to elaborate on these completely unprovoked remarks. Maresca emphasized that supporters were not the "many people" he was referencing and later told gathered journalists: "I'm not frustrated with all of you."

This led many to believe that Maresca was alluding to Chelsea's leadership, specifically co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart along with involved co-owner Behdad Eghbali. Though it remains purely conjecture, several reports have suggested that Maresca has become frustrated with having his approach continuously challenged by influential figures at the club.

Tuesday's Carabao Cup quarterfinal triumph over League One side Cardiff City did nothing to improve Maresca's demeanor, who appeared so dejected after the 3–1 victory that one journalist asked if he was genuinely pleased.

The more revealing response came when asked whether Maresca had heard from Chelsea's ownership or sporting directors following his comments. "No," he confirmed.

"As I mentioned yesterday, the day following Everton, I began preparing for Cardiff, concentrating on Cardiff. Now I just said, on the bus I will review Newcastle matches [to prepare for Saturday's game] and I haven't spoken with any of them."

Given the frequent involvement of Chelsea's senior management—who have been known to regularly interrupt the dressing room before, after and even during certain matches—Maresca's lack of communication is a fascinating development.

Maresca Responds to Chelsea Supporter Reaction

One element of Tuesday evening that did bring a slight smile to Maresca's face was the response from the traveling Chelsea supporters. After hearing his name chanted in the final moments of the cup victory, the subdued manager admitted: "It was a wonderful moment.

"I value it and I am constantly grateful. I mentioned repeatedly the backing has always been present, understanding that any fans worldwide are not satisfied when you don't win. In certain instances when we haven't secured victories they have not been pleased, but it is understandable. Generally the supporters have always been there.

"You cannot fathom how delighted I am for the players because it is another semifinal for them, the supporters, for everyone."

Maresca and Chelsea were the first to secure their place in the Carabao Cup semifinals, where they will meet one of Manchester City or Brentford, Newcastle United or Fulham or one of Arsenal and Crystal Palace.
