Erling Haaland Poised to Obliterate the Champions League Goalscoring Record Against PSG

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland needs only to take the field against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday to claim yet another Champions League record for his collection.

The lethal striker will become the highest-scoring player in Europe's top club competition through 60 appearances—and he won't even need to score against the reigning cup holders to achieve it.

Haaland currently sits at 59 goals in 59 Champions League outings. No other player, including all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, has ever reached 50 goals within their first 60 appearances. The 26-year-old has effectively already secured the record, but he will officially cement his place in history when he features in his 60th Champions League fixture this week.

City welcome PSG in their second league phase encounter of the 2026–27 season. Enzo Maresca's side enter the match riding an eight-game winning run, with their latest victory coming against Liverpool following the club's conviction on 114 Premier League financial regulation breaches.

Haaland's 65th-minute finish wrapped up all three points in the 3–0 win, taking the Norwegian international's seasonal tally to eight goals from as many games. Any further contributions against PSG will only extend the gap between him and the other iconic names on the Champions League scoring leaderboard.

Haaland is set to enter an elite bracket. From Wednesday onward, his name will appear above Ruud van Nistelrooy in the record books, with at least 11 more goals than the Manchester United icon across the same number of matches.

The names further down the list are equally illustrious. Harry Kane netted 45 goals in his opening 60 Champions League appearances, while Kylian Mbappé contributed 40. Both Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski had tallied 39 by the time they reached 60 games.

The expanded league phase has helped Haaland boost his numbers, but the No. 9 was already rewriting the record books well before the competition's format was overhauled. The Norwegian holds the record for the most Champions League goals through his first 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 appearances.

Each of those milestones represents a Champions League record, as does his tally of 59 (or more) goals in 60 appearances. Haaland is also guaranteed to hold the record for most goals in 70 appearances; Van Nistelrooy currently holds that mark with 55 goals—a figure Haaland has already eclipsed.

Haaland Chasing the Champions League's All-Time Greats

Cristiano Ronaldo

At only 26, Haaland's 59 Champions League goals place him eighth on the competition's all-time scoring list. He has already surpassed the likes of Thierry Henry, Mohamed Salah, and Kane in the rankings.

Nevertheless, several Champions League legends still stand ahead of him. Ronaldo's 141 goals tops the chart, with Messi's 129 and Lewandowski's 109 following behind. These three are the only players to have ever broken the 100-goal barrier on Europe's grandest stage.

Given his current scoring pace, Haaland looks destined to reach that landmark too. Whether he can ultimately unseat Ronaldo—a race Mbappé is also contesting—remains to be seen, but his ascent up the all-time charts appears inevitable.

One more goal from Haaland draws him level with Van Nistelrooy. After that, he can set his sights on Mbappé, the only other active player remaining in the top 10 of the Champions League scoring charts.
