It took Erling Haaland just over four seasons to surpass every other player in Manchester City's Premier League history for headed goals, but the foundation of this record stretches back nearly ten years.
Despite his imposing 6'5" frame, Haaland has never been particularly celebrated as a header of the ball. In fact, only three of his first 27 goals for the club made use of his height. One of the most iconic moments of the Norwegian's time at the Etihad was his stunning volley against Borussia Dortmund—an acrobatic back-heel taken six feet off the ground that arguably would have been simpler to finish with his head.
Haaland had a chance to convert what appeared to be a straightforward header in the opening Manchester derby of 2024, only to nod it over the crossbar. The miss stayed with him. "People say I'm good at scoring goals but I missed the biggest chance in the world ever," he lamented long after the moment had passed. These days, Haaland rarely lets such opportunities slip by.

As Enzo Fernández released Antoine Semenyo down the byline, Haaland made his run. Brushing off a push from Coventry City's Aurèle Amenda, City's No. 9 powered past the Swiss center back, unfazed by a firm tug on his shirt, to powerfully meet the ball at the back post. Haaland flashed a cheeky glance at Amenda sprawled in the six-yard box before celebrating the only goal of Saturday's tight victory for City.
Just the previous week, Haaland had also broken the deadlock against Crystal Palace with a very different kind of header, arcing the ball over Dean Henderson from another Semenyo delivery. While this reflects a growing aerial contribution, Haaland has been honing this element of his game for several years.
Haaland Owes His Success to One Enduring Principle
For Haaland, the formula behind his achievements is straightforward: hard work.
"I think you can always improve in certain areas," the fan-favorite heading into the 2026 World Cup reflected last season. "With headers, there's always room to get better. You can never be good enough. It's something I still try to work on."
This is someone who pursues every possible marginal gain, whether through meditation, wearing blue-light glasses to shield his eyes from screens, consuming raw milk, or walking barefoot to stay grounded. In that light, staying late at training to practice crossing drills almost seems routine.
"I have been working on my headers ever since I started at Molde in 2017 under Ole Gunnar [Solskjær] and Mark Dempsey," Haaland noted, reflecting on his time in Norway alongside the former Manchester United forward. "You can see I'm improving more and more and there is still a long way to go." And indeed, there remains a very long road ahead when it comes to the all-time headed goals record.
Haaland's Chase for All-Time Premier League Record
Haaland remains far from matching Peter Crouch's Premier League record of 53 headed goals. With 20 to his name, the Norwegian has only half the tally amassed by former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur legend Les Ferdinand, who stood just 5'11" but possessed an extraordinary leap.
There is clearly ample time for Haaland to climb the rankings—his current total has been accumulated in just over four years, and he is contracted to Manchester City until 2034. Given the upward curve across virtually every aspect of Haaland's game, can any record truly be considered out of his reach?
