Estevao's Road to Recovery: When Chelsea's Star Prodigy Could Make His Comeback

Estevao's Road to Recovery: When Chelsea's Star Prodigy Could Make His Comeback

Chelsea are in a tough spot as they fight to secure a Champions League berth for next season, though that battle will continue without teenage winger Estêvão for the foreseeable future.

The 18-year-old Brazilian has been one of Chelsea's standout performers this campaign, netting in three consecutive Champions League group stage games. While consistency remains a work in progress for a player his age, it's hard to ignore that the club's recent downturn has overlapped with his ongoing fitness issues.

Estêvão has started just five of Chelsea's last 16 Premier League outings after picking up a muscle injury in December. He was also given compassionate leave at the end of January for undisclosed personal reasons, making for a turbulent stretch overall.

In what was his second consecutive league start, Estêvão was included in Liam Rosenior's starting lineup for Saturday's home clash against Manchester United. Hopes had been building that the youngster was rediscovering his rhythm after missing six games across February and March, but he was forced off the pitch after just 16 minutes.

Alejandro Garnacho came on as his replacement, and Chelsea went on to lose the game.

Closing a seven-point gap on the Premier League's top five with only five games remaining will be an almost impossible task for Chelsea to achieve Champions League qualification.

What Injury Does Estevao Have?

Estêvão

Shortly after returning from a hamstring problem, Estêvão suffered another hamstring setback that left him in tears on the sideline.

"He was crying at halftime," Rosenior told reporters after the match.

"Really devastated for him. It looks like it's his hamstring and that's a moment actually when he's running through on their goal for a one-v-one and pulls his hamstring in that moment. "

The full extent of the injury remains unknown, with recovery time depending entirely on its severity.

When Will Estevao Return From Injury?

Estêvão

Chelsea are unlikely to have a clearer picture until later this week, once any swelling subsides and scans can be carried out, leaving Estêvão's return timeline uncertain for now.

Hamstring injuries vary enormously in terms of recovery, ranging from a matter of days to several months, with the precise nature of the damage being the key determining factor.

All Rosenior could offer was: "I hope Estê comes back sooner rather than later."

The Premier League season wraps up on May 24, just five weeks from now. Given how little time remains, it's entirely possible—pending further medical updates—that Estêvão's season could already be over.

On a personal level, the prospect of missing his first World Cup with Brazil may sting even more. Prior to sitting out March's international window due to his earlier hamstring injury, Estêvão had been called up to every Selecão squad since November 2024.

With Real Madrid's Rodrygo already ruled out due to a long-term knee injury, a starting berth on Brazil's right wing had looked like Estêvão's to claim. That opportunity may now be under threat.
