European Powerhouses Fire Back at Swirling Mohamed Salah Transfer Rumors

Bayern Munich have not submitted a contract proposal to Mohamed Salah, despite reports suggesting the German champions were pursuing the experienced winger.

Salah's Liverpool chapter is drawing to a close, with the forward reaching an agreement with the Reds to terminate the two-year deal he spent considerable time pushing the club to grant him, departing after just one season.

The Egyptian icon turns 34 in June but has no intention of hanging up his boots, and the burning question since Liverpool's announcement is where he will be plying his trade following this summer's World Cup.

Reports out of Egypt suggested Salah has received interest from Bayern, along with Paris Saint-Germain and unspecified Italian clubs—Salah previously represented Fiorentina and Roma in Serie A during the early stages of his career.

Max Eberl, Bayern's board member for sport, was asked to address the speculation by Arabic sports outlet winwin and flatly denied it.

"No, Mohamed Salah has not received any offer from Bayern Munich," Eberl stated.

Which Club Will Mohamed Salah Join?

Michael Olise

A move to Bayern would have given Salah the chance to reunite with close friend and former Liverpool colleague Luis Díaz, who swapped Anfield for the Allianz Arena last summer and has enjoyed a remarkable campaign.

The Bavarian club have no reservations about signing older players, having made Harry Kane their record acquisition and the priciest player in Bundesliga history shortly after his 30th birthday in 2023, but Salah would be vying for the same spot as Michael Olise, who has racked up 43 goal contributions for Bayern this season and is emerging as a Ballon d'Or candidate.

The prospect of Salah landing at PSG also seems unlikely. Under Luis Enrique's stewardship, the club has shifted its focus away from marquee signings in favour of collective development. A player with Salah's commanding personality runs counter to that approach.

In reality, Salah's options for staying in Europe are slim. Any high-profile free agent tends to attract Barcelona's attention, but wages would pose a significant hurdle, as would competing for a position occupied by Lamine Yamal.

The most natural destinations appear to be Major League Soccer, which has grown increasingly appealing to global stars since Lionel Messi's 2023 arrival at Inter Miami, and the Saudi Pro League, where there has long been an ambition to make Salah one of the league's marquee figures.

There are mechanisms to work around the MLS salary cap, meaning Salah wouldn't necessarily face a dramatic pay reduction, depending on the club. Messi's Inter Miami salary sits just above $20 million, though owner Jorge Mas has disclosed that the Argentine can earn up to $80 million per year.

In Saudi Arabia, earning potential is virtually unlimited, with several state-backed clubs offering the highest wages in world football. Cristiano Ronaldo's staggering $235 million salary is an outlier, but illustrates the extraordinary financial power available.

Egypt's national team technical director Ibrahim Hassan recently urged Salah against choosing MLS, arguing it was "too far out of the spotlight" relative to Saudi Arabia. However, league commissioner Don Garber pushed back, highlighting Messi's continued global appeal.
