Ex-Liverpool Star Eyes Wrexham Move as Reds Target Young Talent for Loan Deal

Danny Ward is nearing completion of his move to Wrexham, marking a homecoming for the ex-Liverpool shot-stopper.
Ward will officially enter free agency this week following Leicester City's decision to let him go after their drop to the Championship at the conclusion of the 2024–25 campaign.
According to the Daily Mail, his medical examination at Wrexham is set for Monday, June 30. Ward is anticipated to serve as backup to primary keeper Arthur Okwonko at the Racecourse Ground.
The publication also mentions Wrexham's pursuit of Liverpool's Owen Beck. The 22-year-old defender gained Championship experience during his loan stint with Blackburn Rovers last term, and any potential move to Wales for Ian Rush's great-nephew might involve another temporary arrangement.
Ward hails from Wrexham, where he joined the academy at age 14. He advanced through the youth system but was snapped up by Liverpool in January 2012 before making his senior debut. At 18, Ward made an impression and even featured twice during the closing stages of the 2015–16 Premier League campaign after a stint at Aberdeen.
His loan spell at Huddersfield Town during 2016–17 was crucial in their Premier League promotion, and Liverpool capitalized by selling him to Leicester for £12.5 million ($17.1 million) in summer 2018.
Over seven seasons, Ward mainly served as understudy to Kasper Schmeichel and subsequently Daniel Hermansen. While Ward began 2022–23 as the number one choice, he lost his place before the campaign ended.
Despite never fully cementing himself as a regular starter throughout his club journey, Ward has earned 44 caps for Wales since 2016 and participated in Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and the 2022 World Cup, featuring in at least one match across all three competitions.

A homecoming to Wrexham now awaits. The Reynolds and McElhenney-owned club is preparing for their first Championship campaign since 1981–82, with aspirations of climbing further to reach the Premier League.
Wrexham's meteoric ascent, beginning with their escape from a 15-year spell in the National League's fifth division, necessitates significant squad changes to recruit superior talent appropriate for each new level. Paul Mullin, who had never succeeded above League Two prior to his 2021 arrival, has fallen victim to this approach, remaining in League One on a season-long loan with Wigan Athletic.
The Welsh club has never competed in the Premier League or its pre-1992 predecessor. Wrexham achieved their highest league position in 1978–79, finishing 15th in what is currently known as the Championship.
