Explosive Referee Allegations Rock Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr in Stunning Controversy

Al Ahli's English forward Ivan Toney unleashed a stunning outburst against Saudi Pro League officials, alleging that his title-contending side had been denied several "obvious" penalties and were told by the referee to "focus" on other tournaments.

When pressed on who stood to gain from such a conspiracy, Toney offered a knowing grin. "We know who. Who are we chasing?"

Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr currently sit atop the Pro League standings, holding a two-point advantage over second-placed Al Hilal with a game in hand. The Riyadh club have now stretched their lead to four points over Toney's side following Al Ahli's contentious 1–1 stalemate with Al Fayha on Wednesday evening.

Ronaldo has yet to claim the Saudi top-flight title since joining the league three years ago. Having fallen short in his previous two title bids, Al Nassr now stand just seven matches from glory this season — though Toney has raised serious questions about the conditions surrounding that rise.

Toney Accuses Referee of Telling Al Ahli Players to Forget About the League

"The main talking point was the two penalties," Toney raged in his post-match interview. "It's obvious—plain as day. I don't know what more you want him to do. If he'd picked the ball up with both hands, would you give a penalty then, or not? And when we tried to speak to the referee, he just told us, 'Focus on the AFC [Asian Champions League].'

"How can a referee say that? We're talking about right now and he's telling us, 'Focus on the AFC.'

"If you want me to go further, I can go further, but it might land me in trouble. I'm someone who tells it like it is. I think the obvious point here is that the referee's attention is somewhere else."

Toney appeared visibly frustrated throughout the tense interview but allowed himself a moment of sarcasm. "He [the referee] said his earpiece was recording," the former Brentford striker remarked, "but maybe it cut out at that moment—who knows."

"All season long, it's been a clear penalty," Toney insisted. "But now we're in the decisive stage, they change the standard. I don't know why."

These accusations were no impulsive reaction. Toney later reinforced his stance on social media, sharing footage of the penalty incidents on his Instagram story before writing: "It's genuinely unbelievable how you can miss things like this at critical moments or simply choose to look the other way.

"And without saying too much that might get me in trouble, it's obvious what's being influenced here!!!

"Also, the referee telling us to concentrate on a different competition while VAR is in progress is completely beyond me.

"On top of that, the referee admitting the first one was a penalty in the 90th-plus minute like that's somehow helpful. But I suppose I'm probably the villain for speaking some truths and highlighting questionable calls or s--- refereeing."

"Next time," he concluded, "if necessary I could bring someone from my neighbourhood who knows nothing about football to do a MUCH better job than some of these officials."

Al Ahli Release Official Statement Supporting Toney's Claim

Shortly after the final whistle on Wednesday, Al Ahli issued an official statement conveying the club's "deep dissatisfaction with the refereeing errors" during the draw.

"These errors raise legitimate concerns about the referee selection process and the criteria used, particularly given the high technical and competitive standards of the Saudi Roshn League," the statement read. "The team has been subjected to unjust refereeing decisions — an unacceptable situation that neither supports the growth of the competition nor upholds the principle of sporting fairness, which should underpin any successful tournament.

"Al Ahli Club requests access to the recordings and communications between the referees and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), as well as their exchanges with the team's players during the match. It also requests clear explanations for all refereeing incidents in which decisions were found to be incorrect."

Former Premier League winner Riyad Mahrez, who played the entire 90 minutes alongside Toney, shared Al Ahli's post on social media accompanied by the speaking head emoji.

An intriguing dimension to these allegations lies in the obvious connections between the clubs involved. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) holds a majority stake in all three teams competing for the Pro League title.
