Fernandes Shatters Record as Man Utd Dazzle Brighton in Stunning Masterclass

Manchester United cruised to a commanding 3–0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the campaign, as Bruno Fernandes shattered the Premier League's single-season assist record.

The Red Devils had wrapped up third place well in advance and were primarily focused on serving their creative maestro on the sunny south coast. Brighton, meanwhile, needed a result to secure European football, but were thoroughly outclassed by Michael Carrick's side.

A sluggish opening was lit up by the historic moment, with Patrick Dorgu rising to connect with Fernandes's corner and directing a header beyond Bart Verbruggen off the crossbar. United flourished from that point, delivering a composed display that brought out the very best in the visitors.

Their second goal was beautifully constructed and finished by Bryan Mbeumo, before Fernandes added a third with a precise low strike at the beginning of the second half. With the Seagulls showing little urgency, those in attendance turned their attention to results elsewhere.

Despite dropping a position, Brentford's draw at Liverpool ensured Fabian Hürzeler's side secured a Conference League spot.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

Bruno Fernandes

Locked into third place and with little left to fight for as a unit, the trip down to the south coast was always going to revolve around Bruno Fernandes.

Thierry Henry's single-season assist record has stood firm for over two decades, with only Kevin De Bruyne matching the Frenchman's tally of 20 since the benchmark was set in 2002–03. Many have threatened to surpass this mark, most notably Mesut Özil during his peak years in north London, but the figure of 20 has remained untouchable.

Fernandes drew level with Henry and De Bruyne the previous weekend, leaving him with just 90 minutes to make history. 21 Premier League assists had been the sport's equivalent of the four-minute mile, and we've finally found our Sir Roger Bannister.

Fittingly, it was a set-piece that sealed the record for Fernandes. His outswinging corner was powerfully headed home by Patrick Dorgu to break the deadlock. Nine of his 21 league assists this season have originated from dead-ball situations, with his usual beneficiary Casemiro absent on the final day.

But to suggest Fernandes has been overly dependent on set pieces would be a gross understatement of his contribution. He has dominated virtually every creative metric this season and is certain to collect a host of individual honours as a result.

Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Brighton (4-2-3-1)

Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo

*Player ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Senne Lammens—8.1: The Belgian steadied himself after a couple of shaky moments in possession early on. The hosts rarely tested him throughout the afternoon.

RB: Noussair Mazraoui—7.3: An uncommon start for the Moroccan under Carrick, who picked up some knocks after the break. Mazraoui was dependable throughout, offering technical composure in the build-up phase.

CB: Harry Maguire—7.2: Making his first appearance since being left out of Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad, Maguire was solid on the south coast. He's certainly faced more demanding defensive tests.

CB: Lisandro Martínez—7.0: The centre-back will be relieved to have come through the Amex unharmed. Martínez has looked assured under Carrick and arrives at the World Cup in good shape.

LB: Luke Shaw—6.9: Remarkably, Shaw clocked up his 38th Premier League start of the season — arguably a more impressive feat than Fernandes's creative exploits, given his well-documented injury history. The left back was lively at the Amex, posing a threat when cutting inside.

CM: Mason Mount—7.6: Mount isn't a permanent answer in a post-Casemiro setup, but the Englishman looked comfortable in a deeper midfield role. A Paul Scholes-style career evolution, perhaps?

CM: Kobbie Mainoo—7.5: A somewhat inconsistent showing from Mainoo, who was careless at times but also produced some brilliant dribbling sequences. The ball appeared magnetised to his feet at moments, leaving Brighton's midfield bewildered by his sharpness.

RM: Amad Diallo—8.1: Carrick appreciates what the Ivorian brings defensively, but Amad showed genuine attacking intent in the final third on Sunday.

AM: Bruno Fernandes—8.9: United were superb, but this was undeniably Fernandes's occasion. Some may question the significance of an assist record, but this was a genuine piece of Premier League history.

LM: Patrick Dorgu—8.5: A fine return to the starting eleven for Dorgu, who headed home brilliantly from Fernandes's corner to open the scoring. The Dane was a constant menace during his hour on the pitch and has developed a strong understanding with Shaw on the left flank.

ST: Bryan Mbeumo—7.7: Mbeumo delivered once again from the centre-forward role, finishing from close range to cap a slick United move.

SUB: Shea Lacey (62' for Dorgu)—6.2: The youngster, who was sent off when these sides met in the FA Cup, showed energy and bravery, looking to cut inside from the right.

SUB: Joshua Zirkzee (74' for Mbeumo)—6.1: The Dutchman was given some minutes in the absence of Benjamin Šeško.

SUB: Leny Yoro (74' for Mazraoui)—6.3: Carrick deployed Yoro at right back from the bench, and it will be worth monitoring whether that role becomes more regular for him next season.

SUB: Tyler Fletcher (74' for Mount)—6.3: Little to comment.

SUB: Tyrell Malacia (82' for Shaw)—N/A

Subs not used: Altay Bayındır (GK), Matheus Cunha, Manuel Ugarte, Ayden Heaven.
