Five Clubs Battle for Harry Maguire as Man Utd Field Transfer Offers

Manchester United have reportedly fielded five inquiries for Harry Maguire during this summer window, with interest coming from both Premier League and Serie A clubs—all of which have been rejected by the Red Devils.

Maguire continues to rank as the third most costly acquisition in the club's transfer history after his £80 million ($106.6 million) switch from Leicester City in 2019. The central defender has faced numerous challenges both in matches and away from football, yet may see out his playing days at Old Trafford.

The Daily Mail reports that three English top-flight teams, along with two Italian clubs, have "investigated" the prospect of acquiring Maguire in recent months.

The 32-year-old has now reached the final season of his current deal, but those organizations that contacted United are understood to have been told of the club's desire to retain him. Maguire is reportedly eager to remain, harboring ambitions of following in the footsteps of club icons Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister, both instrumental figures during United's early Premier League success thirty years ago.

To date, no discussions regarding a contract extension are believed to have commenced.

Should Maguire fail to secure a new deal at Old Trafford over the coming year, he is anticipated to attract interest as a potential free agent becomes available. Turkish powerhouses Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş—the final two led by former United managers José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær—are mentioned among clubs showing interest. French sides Monaco and Marseille represent additional suitors.

Having joined with the tag of the world's most expensive defender, Maguire has consistently remained committed to succeeding in Manchester. He declined a transfer to West Ham United during summer 2023 despite an agreed fee, choosing instead to compete for his position. This came weeks after permanently losing the captaincy to Bruno Fernandes following his fall from grace under then-manager Erik ten Hag during the previous 2022–23 season.

Maguire, who continues to await an appeal regarding a 2020 Greek court conviction for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery, experienced declining performances from 2021 onward and has been unavailable through injuries for 132 days (per Transfermarkt) across just the past two campaigns. However, he featured in most Premier League matches following Ruben Amorim's arrival at Old Trafford last November, with the manager's preferred three-at-the-back formation demanding substantial defensive options.

With Victor Lindelöf and Jonny Evans departed, and Lisandro Martínez potentially sidelined until at least mid-September, Maguire will represent one of just five available center-backs for the season opener—a squad including youngsters Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven and Tyler Fredricson.
