Five Crucial Questions That Will Define Real Madrid's 2026–27 Season

Real Madrid are just days away from launching their 2026–27 campaign, and plenty of questions surround the world's biggest club under the polarizing and unpredictable José Mourinho.

Los Blancos have been in decline over the past two years, most notably failing to capture a major trophy in consecutive seasons. They have also cycled through three managers, endured a dressing room civil war, and suffered repeated injury crises that compounded the team's already significant on-pitch struggles.

A fresh start awaits this season — one that could signal either a triumphant comeback or total collapse. There is seldom a middle ground at the Bernabéu, where victories are celebrated with enormous fanfare and defeats are condemned by millions of supporters worldwide.

Optimism runs high across the Spanish capital that 2026–27 could be the year Real Madrid reclaim their near-impossible standards — but only if Mourinho and his squad can find answers to several pressing questions.

Will Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr Finally Get It Right?

Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior

Very little has gone according to plan at Real Madrid since Kylian Mbappé arrived at the 15-time European champions ahead of the 2024–25 season. Despite netting 86 goals in 103 outings, the Frenchman has found it difficult to integrate smoothly into the team's attacking setup.

Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior have failed to develop chemistry over the past two seasons. Both players gravitate toward the same areas on the left flank, leaving a gaping void through the center of Los Blancos' attack. They also tend to take matters into their own hands individually, while the other waits in vain for a pass that rarely arrives.

In fact, the attack tends to function more effectively when either Mbappé or Vinícius Jr operates without the other. Moments of genuine connection between the two have existed, but they remain rare and sporadic.

If Real Madrid are to challenge for major honors in 2026–27, their two star forwards must finally find a way to click together.

Will Mourinho Clash With His Ego-Ruled Dressing Room?

José Mourinho, Real Madrid

Mourinho's return to the Bernabéu is set to be explosive. The manager previously served three years at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, and by the time he departed, he had very public fallouts with Iker Casillas, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema.

Now the "Special One" is back, walking into a dressing room once again dominated by strong personalities — and one with a history of tense, sometimes even physical, confrontations between players. Introducing a figure like Mourinho into an already volatile atmosphere could prove catastrophic.

For now, the new manager appears to be settling in well. Jude Bellingham described working with Mourinho as "a dream," while Mbappé spoke positively about having a boss who "knows how to win."

However, it remains to be seen how all the big names, outsized egos, and strong personalities will coexist once the pressure mounts across La Liga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.

What Is the Answer to Real Madrid's Midfield Woes?

Bernardo Silva clapping.

Real Madrid have been in need of a deep-lying playmaker ever since Toni Kroos hung up his boots in the summer of 2024. Yet the club has failed to address that need across four subsequent transfer windows, opting instead to reinforce their defense and attack.

As a result, Los Blancos have struggled to dominate possession and break down defensive blocks. The likes of Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga too frequently recycle the ball without purpose, passing sideways and backwards rather than driving play forward.

The signing of Rodri could have transformed the midfield dynamic, but the newly crowned World Cup winner opted for Barcelona instead. Real Madrid's only new midfield addition this summer is Rodri's former Manchester City teammate Bernardo Silva.

Silva will face considerable pressure to revitalize a misfiring engine room, though Mourinho may also consider deploying Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield if the team continues to lack creative output.

How Will New Signings Handle the Pressure?

Yan Diomande

Alongside Silva, Real Madrid have brought in Marc Cucurella, Yan Diomande, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konaté, and Carlos Espí this summer. Cucurella is set to cover the left flank, while Diomande is expected to operate on the right wing. Konaté, meanwhile, could slot into the center-back role while Éder Militão recovers from injury.

These presumed starters could prove transformative for a side desperate to wrest the Spanish title away from Barcelona. All three positions have been persistent weak spots for the 15-time European champions over the past two seasons — and now potential solutions have arrived.

The onus will be on each player to live up to the weight of the badge. The spotlight will fall particularly on 19-year-old Diomande, who joined from RB Leipzig in a deal potentially worth a record-breaking $161.6 million (€140 million).

Real Madrid have enormous expectations for the explosive winger, and patience is unlikely to be in abundant supply.

Will Real Madrid Return to Glory?

Vinícius Júnior

The single most pressing question on every Madridista's mind around the world is whether the club will lift a trophy in 2026–27. Yes, it has only been two seasons since Los Blancos claimed La Liga, the Champions League, and the Spanish Super Cup.

But at Real Madrid, two seasons without silverware is two too many. Trophies are expected. Trophies are demanded. Trophies are simply non-negotiable.

The only way to silence the jeers at the Bernabéu is to deliver silverware. Mourinho's side begin their quest to dethrone Barcelona on Saturday away at Espanyol.
