Xabi Alonso is reportedly set to have a "major influence" on Chelsea's transfer activity after taking charge, with an emphasis on signing several "seasoned" players believed to be firmly on the radar of a markedly different kind of appointment for the club.
The manager's role had progressively been stripped of its importance by BlueCo at Chelsea, with their disregard for the position illustrated by the appointment of the thoroughly overwhelmed Liam Rosenior.
Nevertheless, it appears that Rosenior's dismal tenure has prompted a rethink in west London.
The Blues have tied down the highly-respected Alonso on a four-year deal. The Spaniard arrives with his standing undiminished despite only a short stint at Real Madrid, where this Los Blancos squad proved virtually impossible to manage.
He's an outstanding coach capable of restoring Chelsea to the top of English football after a prolonged spell in the doldrums. Alonso, unlike several of his BlueCo-era predecessors, is expected to wield considerable influence over recruitment at Stamford Bridge, per The Guardian.

Those at the top appear ready to hand Alonso the reins to get his project underway, and the Spaniard's work kicks off with a crucial summer transfer window.
Experience is reportedly set to be a priority across several positions of need, including goalkeeper, center back and wide areas. Here are five players they could pursue this summer.
Robin Roefs

Mike Penders has impressed on loan at Strasbourg and is heading to the World Cup with Belgium as a result. He has the potential to displace Robert Sánchez as Chelsea's first choice, but the Blues will almost certainly bolster their goalkeeping options further.
Sánchez, ultimately, cannot be counted on as the club's long-term starting goalkeeper. Another change in the dugout should give the club the opportunity to part ways with the Spaniard and start fresh.
Alonso needs a more composed and assured presence in possession, and Sunderland's Robin Roefs appears to be an ideal candidate. The Dutchman is a composed figure between the sticks, bringing a sense of calm to his backline while projecting the air of a goalkeeper who has every situation firmly in hand. Crucially, his debut Premier League campaign has been largely error-free.
According to Opta, he ranks second in the division with 104 saves and also boasts the second-best save percentage (70.3%). At just 23 years old, there's still plenty of room for development, yet he already looks like one of the Premier League's finest.
Sunderland demonstrated with Jobe Bellingham last summer that they're prepared to sell key assets for the right fee, and a number of clubs could enter the race for Roefs.
Ousmane Diomande

Chelsea have been linked with Ousmane Diomande for some time, and they will soon welcome the center back's teammate, Geovany Quenda, to the club.
Diomande is an exceptionally gifted defender who, at 22, already carries a wealth of experience. He has been part of title-winning Sporting CP sides under Ruben Amorim and recently helped the Portuguese club reach the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time since the competition's rebrand.
He has thrived in both a back three and back four, and Alonso may rotate between defensive setups regularly in west London. That adaptability will appeal to the new manager, who would also appreciate what Diomande brings in possession. The defender's stunning trivela pass for Maxi Araújo carved open Arsenal's resolute defense and should have resulted in the opening goal in their recent European encounter.
He looks like the ideal fit for Alonso, with Chelsea potentially ready to commit after years of circling. However, the new deal he penned in January means he will not come at a bargain price.
Marcos Senesi

Not every signing Chelsea make this summer needs to be a headline-grabbing move or spark grand predictions of a Premier League title challenge. Some will be understated, intelligent additions required to bring balance to the squad.
Levi Colwill showed in the FA Cup final that he's a defender Alonso can build his backline around. Assuming he steers clear of further significant injury setbacks following his recovery from an ACL tear, 2026–27 promises to be a hugely promising campaign for the Englishman.
Cover behind Colwill could be sought, however, and Chelsea are understood to be interested in soon-to-be free agent Marcos Senesi. Approaching 30 and with extensive Premier League experience, Senesi could serve as a valuable rotation option to give Colwill a breather.
The Argentine is not without his weaknesses, certainly, but he's a composed operator in possession who excels at playing long-range passes. The methodical Alonso favors a patient, shorter style, but Senesi undoubtedly has the technical quality to flourish in a more intricate system.
Tottenham Hotspur are said to be at the front of the queue, but their potential relegation — which Chelsea could help bring about on Tuesday night — would swing the door open for the Blues.
Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United are standing by Eddie Howe despite a disappointing season on Tyneside, but it appears their attack will no longer be built around Anthony Gordon.
The England international is expected to depart this summer and reportedly has a strong list of suitors, including Bayern Munich. Some may question why Europe's most formidable attacking outfit are chasing a player like Gordon, who can be inconsistent at times yet is electrifying when hitting his stride.
Gordon may blow hot and cold, but he's a manager's ideal player. He contributes enormously without the ball, and Alonso would undoubtedly prize that work rate. There's a shortage of creativity in one-on-one situations, but Gordon can suffocate, overpower and get past defenders through sheer determination.
Furthermore, his performances as a striker in the Champions League this season mean his signing would address two needs at once. Gordon can play on the left wing, where Chelsea are badly in need of an upgrade following Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens's underwhelming debut campaigns, while also providing better backup for João Pedro through the middle.
Liam Delap's services will not be called upon under the new manager. Nicolas Jackson, however, may yet have a role to play.
Bradley Barcola

The overlooked member of Paris Saint-Germain's four-man attack, Bradley Barcola could depart the French capital in search of a more central role elsewhere. It echoes the Neymar strategy, albeit one that didn't quite pan out for the Brazilian.
Chelsea's wing play has been labored for much of 2025–26, though they do have something special in young Estêvão, even if he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a serious hamstring injury. Alonso would ideally want someone capable of operating effectively on either flank, and Barcola is regularly asked to cover multiple areas within Luis Enrique's fluid system.
Under contract at PSG until 2028, Barcola faces a significant decision this summer. With reports of PSG preparing a lucrative new offer, he'll need to choose between committing his future to the Parisians or seeking a fresh challenge elsewhere.
A transfer would be costly, but perhaps not at a level that would strain even the biggest budgets, so Chelsea should view a potential move for the lanky yet brilliant winger as realistic. He can be wasteful in front of goal, but Barcola's flair and unpredictable nature make him a captivating player to watch.
The Premier League should embrace a player of his ilk with enthusiasm.
