Flick Drops Major Update on Yamal's Status Ahead of Crucial Barcelona-Getafe Clash
Barcelona are still dealing with Lamine Yamal's unavailability following the September international window, as Hansi Flick confirmed the talented winger will miss Sunday's fixture against Getafe.
Yamal sustained what was characterized as a groin injury during the September break while on duty with Spain.
Flick criticized the national team setup upon his return: "He remains unavailable. He departed to represent Spain carrying discomfort and couldn't participate in training. They administered pain medication to enable his participation. Despite holding commanding three-goal advantages in both fixtures, he still featured for 73 and 79 minutes respectively. He was unable to train between matches. This isn't proper player management. I'm deeply disappointed about this situation."
Deco, Barcelona's sporting director, supported the German coach's stance, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced dialogue between the Spanish national setup and the Catalan institution.
Flick characterized Yamal's status as "day-to-day" during his pre-match media briefing before their second home fixture of the campaign at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, stating supporters will "need to be patient" before witnessing the youngster back in action.
SPORT indicated Barcelona are aiming for their Champions League encounter with Paris Saint-Germain as Yamal's target return date for complete fitness, though he might feature in the midweek clash against Real Oviedo on Sept. 25. This could position him for increased playing time versus Real Sociedad on Sept. 28.
Yamal was absent for Barcelona's home debut against Valencia and their Champions League opening match against Newcastle United. However, Marcus Rashford has stepped up impressively with a double against the English side. He also contributed an assist at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.
While Yamal remains sidelined, Rashford is expected to receive significant playing time. Flick deployed Raphinha on the right wing against Newcastle with the England striker operating from the left.
