Flick Reveals Crucial Barcelona Defender's Injury Status as Fans Hold Their Breath

Barcelona wrapped up their Asian preseason campaign with a flawless performance, netting 15 goals across three matches, though concerns arose when promising defender Pau Cubarsí sustained an injury during their latest fixture.
The 18-year-old came on as a substitute against Daegu FC in the second period but was subsequently withdrawn due to what appeared to be a knee problem. While the incident raised alarm bells, head coach Hansi Flick has provided reassurance about the gifted youngster's condition.
"He's fine [Cubarsí], just took a hit to his left knee," Flick explained, bringing relief to anxious Barcelona supporters.
Flick appeared genuinely worried when Cubarsí was being treated by medical staff on the field before leaving the game. Thankfully for the German tactician and Barcelona, the problem doesn't seem to be serious.
Cubarsí established himself as a key figure in Flick's squad during his debut campaign with the team—only Raphinha and Pedri featured more frequently throughout 2024–25. Despite his young age, Cubarsí has demonstrated he's the ideal center back for Flick's defensive approach and is already regarded as among the world's elite central defenders.
Barcelona have Ronald Araújo, Andreas Christensen, Eric García and Jules Koundé as backup options should Cubarsí be unavailable. However, La Masia graduate Gerard Martín was Flick's selection to fill the role after Cubarsí departed the field. Post-match, the German highlighted Martín's adaptability.
"It was encouraging to witness Gerard's ability to operate in central defence, similar to how we saw Eric [García] successfully cover at right back last season."
Despite having multiple alternatives available, it's evident Flick considers Cubarsí as Barcelona's first-choice partner for Iñigo Martínez. The Catalans will be hoping Cubarsí recovers completely and is available for the Joan Gamper Trophy on Aug. 10, the club's concluding preseason fixture before their La Liga championship defense kicks off against Mallorca six days afterward.
