Barcelona and Spain defender Eric Garcia has been ruled out of the remainder of the autumn international break after suffering a knee injury.
Garcia had been selected by Luis de la Fuente in Spain's starting eleven to face England at Wembley Stadium on Saturday but was unable to make it to kickoff. A "minor issue" during the prematch warm-up, as described by his national team coach, forced an emergency tactical change with consequences extending beyond that Nations League fixture.
De la Fuente was initially hopeful that Garcia would be fit ahead of Spain's next international match against Croatia on Tuesday, but the 25-year-old has withdrawn completely. Given Hansi Flick's well-documented admiration for a player who holds such a significant role in Barcelona's system, this development will not have been welcomed in Catalonia.
Eric Garcia Injury Progress, Potential Return
Garcia was withdrawn with "discomfort in his left knee," according to the Spanish football federation. An official statement confirmed that the versatile defender would be returned to his club for additional medical evaluation.
De la Fuente maintained that "it doesn't seem serious," and the indication has been that this is a precautionary measure rather than a reaction to something more severe. There is optimism that Garcia could be fit in time for Barcelona's league return against Getafe on Saturday, Oct. 10.
The so-called 'FIFA Virus' appears to be hitting Barcelona particularly hard, as the club continues to lose players to injuries picked up during international duty. With a demanding run of fixtures in October ahead — including a Champions League showdown with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain and the season's first Clásico — Flick cannot afford to take any risks, particularly with a player as crucial as Garcia.

There are no standout physical attributes that immediately distinguish Eric Garcia. The 5'11" right back is neither exceptionally quick nor commanding in aerial duels. It has been seven months since his last assist and over a year since his most recent goal. Yet he remains indispensable to Flick.
"Eric, from the beginning of the season since I arrived, you could see his potential," Flick praised last term. "When you want to be a leader, it's important you have those things, that you're professional, disciplined, help your teammates, and he always gives everything for the team.
"It doesn't matter if he plays right back, left back, center back, defensive midfield, or on the bench, he's always the same."
Garcia is essentially his manager's representative on the field. A former captain at every youth level in Barcelona's academy, he expanded his development with a stint under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. During a prematch warm-up before a match against Watford in 2019, Garcia noticed that Quique Sánchez Flores's side had lined up in an unfamiliar formation and quickly alerted Guardiola, who immediately adjusted his tactics. Within 18 minutes, City were 5–0 ahead.
The World Cup winner began working toward his coaching qualifications in his early teens and channels that understanding into every game. This level of tactical awareness is priceless for a manager like Flick, who operates such a sophisticated pressing system that can unravel with even the smallest error. Fortunately for the German coach, his on-pitch lieutenant is not anticipated to miss significant playing time.
