Florian Wirtz Breaks Silence on Liverpool's Sluggish Season Start: 'It's No Secret'

Florian Wirtz has acknowledged that his difficulty in reaching peak performance following his record-breaking summer move to Liverpool represents an unfamiliar challenge in his professional journey.

Liverpool secured a £116 million ($156.8 million) deal to bring Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, establishing him as the most costly player in British football history—a record that was subsequently surpassed by the £125 million transfer that brought Alexander Isak to Anfield.

However, while new teammate Hugo Ekitiké, who arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt, has quickly adjusted to Premier League football, Wirtz has encountered greater difficulties. The 22-year-old has yet to register a goal or assist in Premier League or Champions League competition, having only provided one assist in the Community Shield, and found himself relegated to the bench for the recent Merseyside derby clash with Everton.

"Naturally, I would have preferred to have found the net by now," Wirtz shared with Sky Sport Germany.

"However, regardless of what others might say, I'm maintaining my composure. I understand my abilities, and I'm confident that I'll eventually showcase my true potential on the field, so I'm remaining calm.

"I don't wish to hear: 'Be patient, be patient.' Rather, I simply attempt to improve with each performance compared to the last. Sometimes there are periods when things don't click for you; this hasn't happened frequently in my career. Once I overcome this phase—which might sound dramatic, since I'm not performing poorly, I just haven't achieved the [goals and assists] yet—it will come naturally, and then everything will fall into place.

"It's obvious that I would have preferred more output by this point, but I remain patient, and as I mentioned, I'm fully aware that I possess strong footballing abilities. Eventually, I'm certain that things will return to their usual standard."
