Former Barcelona Director Reveals Why Landing World-Class Striker Was Mission Impossible

The summer of 2021 remains a dark chapter in Barcelona's history, as the club's dire financial situation forced the exit of their most iconic player: Lionel Messi.
Following that turbulent summer, Jordi Cruyff—offspring of Barcelona icon Johan Cruyff—became part of the club's executive structure as a key decision-maker. After Messi's shocking exit, Barcelona was determined to bring in a world-class replacement. That target was Erling Haaland.
The current Manchester City forward has consistently caught the attention of Barcelona executives. Speaking to SPORT, Cruyff disclosed that while working for the Catalan giants, they fantasized about witnessing Haaland wearing Barcelona colors.
"Indeed, it was somewhat of a fantasy. We were fantasizing about acquiring Haaland or Lewandowski," Cruyff stated when questioned about potential transfers he wished to complete. "We desired a player who could create a statement. A marquee acquisition that would announce 'we've returned, we're ready to challenge for all titles'. The club desperately needed such a move at that moment."
"The reality was that it became an unachievable deal," Cruyff continued. "Despite his [Haaland's] willingness to consider it, it remained a transaction we simply couldn't execute."
Barcelona pursued Haaland's signature during the 2022 summer window. Ultimately, Manchester City secured the Norwegian sensation's services. The Catalans then shifted focus and successfully brought Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.
However, as late as October last year, media reports suggested that Barcelona president Joan Laporta remained interested in making Haaland the club's flagship signing for their return to the refurbished Camp Nou. Haaland has subsequently signed a decade-long deal with Man City, making his potential move to Barcelona even more unlikely.
