Former USMNT Star Eyes Shocking Mexico Switch in Bold 2026 World Cup Gambit
The United States men's national soccer team faces the possibility of losing a promising player as Richy Ledezma considers switching his national team commitment to Mexico before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Ledezma, who recently transferred from PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands to Chivas Guadalajara in Liga MX, has expressed his clear desire to represent El Tri, stating it would realize a childhood aspiration, even though he has previously competed for the U.S. at both youth and senior international levels.
"If the opportunity arises, representing Mexico at the World Cup is something I've always dreamed of... I would be honored to play for Mexico. With a successful season at Chivas, I believe I could earn my place," Ledezma shared during a conversation with Cancha.
"[My Chivas teammates] encourage me about the possibility of joining the national squad, and honestly, I've told them I feel more ready than ever for this opportunity, so we'll see when my moment comes."
Despite his history with the USMNT, the 25-year-old midfielder remains eligible to switch his national team allegiance to Mexico according to FIFA's one-time transfer rules. His limited involvement with just one USMNT cap and no competitive match appearances means he isn't permanently tied to the American team.
During his sole international appearance, he contributed 22 minutes of play and recorded two assists in the USMNT's dominant 6–2 victory over Panama on Nov. 6, 2020 in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.
Mexico Previously Approached Ledezma

Arizona-born but brought up in a Mexican family environment, Ledezma had previously declined overtures from the Mexican football federation, choosing instead to compete for a position on the USMNT squad during his European career and his stint with MLS club New York City FC in 2023.
Following his move to Chivas, he has featured in 17 matches between Liga MX and Leagues Cup competitions, netting one goal and contributing five assists.
Chivas have advanced to the Liga MX Apertura playoffs and will meet 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup champions Cruz Azul in the quarterfinal round, with the opening match scheduled for Nov. 26 and the return leg on Nov. 29.
For Ledezma, maintaining strong performances through the season's conclusion and into 2026 will be essential if he aims to secure a World Cup squad position as a newcomer to El Tri. Mexico has only four remaining fixtures in the March and June international periods before beginning the tournament on June 10 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
