France's Stars Fire Back at Lamine Yamal in Heated World Cup Semifinal Buildup

The tension surrounding Tuesday's World Cup semifinal between Spain and France was already intense before Barcelona's Lamine Yamal turned up the heat even further.

Yamal urged France's players to "fear" Spain ahead of Tuesday's latest chapter in this storied international rivalry, but his remarks didn't go down well with several of Les Bleus' most prominent stars.

"We shouldn't be afraid of anyone," center back Ibrahima Konaté fired back. "What matters is keeping the humility we've shown since the start of this tournament and not falling into those kinds of traps, especially at a moment like this.

"[Yamal] can say whatever he likes. We'll prepare for the game in the best way we can, and I hope that when it's all said and done, the result goes our way."

When asked how France intends to neutralize Yamal, the new Real Madrid defender emphasized: "Spain is an exceptional side, packed with outstanding individuals. But the objective isn't to fixate on one player, because the entire team can cause damage. It's not just Lamine — it's Spain as a whole."

Midfielder Adrien Rabiot also acknowledged there is no "anti-Lamine Yamal strategy" heading into the next installment of a rivalry that grabbed headlines during Euro 2024.

Euro 2024 served as a breakout tournament for Yamal, who was just 16 at the time and played a pivotal role in Spain's continental triumph — a run that included a semifinal victory over Rabiot's France.

Ahead of that match, Rabiot suggested Yamal needed to "do more" to carry Spain to the final, only for Yamal to answer with a spectacular goal in a 2–1 win. "Speak now," the young winger said to the cameras while celebrating, before telling reporters the message was "for the person it was meant for — they'll know it was for them."

Two years on, the two are set to cross paths on the pitch once more, and Rabiot was pressed on the pre-match jab that came back to haunt him the last time they met.

"I don't recall those comments exactly," he said. "But if I made them, it was because that's what I believed at the time. This is still a football match, and we're not scared of anyone.

"Given everything we've been through to get here, we've arrived at this semifinal in the best shape possible. All the conditions are in our favor. Honestly, I don't think we could have been better prepared. The pitch will have the final say, because that's football."
