Frenkie de Jong Makes Major Move to End Barcelona Contract Saga Once and For All

Frenkie de Jong has made what appears to be a significant move toward remaining at Barcelona following his decision to hire a new representative who is already in discussions with the club regarding a contract extension.

De Jong parted ways with his long-term agent Ali Dursun during the summer, but this change might actually facilitate a renewal that would extend beyond his current deal ending in 2026.

Mundo Deportivo reports that De Jong had "lost confidence" in Dursun's negotiating capabilities with Barcelona, and felt "misled" by the representative who had supported him since his emergence at Ajax.

The Dutch midfielder reportedly secured new representation quickly, with his new agent already reaching out to Barcelona to express desire for discussions with sporting director Deco about a potential contract.

Barcelona currently has other pressing matters, specifically arranging departures for Iñaki Peña, Oriol Romeu and Héctor Fort, which would enable the registration of Roony Bardghji, Wojciech Szczęsny and Gerard Martín. Consequently, there's no immediate urgency to finalize a new deal with De Jong, but should the new representative "demonstrate genuine interest in prompt meetings and comply with the club's renewal conditions" progress could be swift, similar to the recent situation with Jules Koundé.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta voiced his enthusiasm at last season's conclusion about retaining De Jong, also referencing "personal and professional issues" that have since come to light.

"I have consistently admired De Jong. He represents a player who embodies the Barcelona philosophy, comes from the Ajax tradition, possesses strong character, and I believe he's thriving," Laporta praised before the media.

"Specifically for him, peak physical condition is essential as he covers extensive ground during matches and brings tremendous value, serving as the one who dictates the game's rhythm. Now that he's fully recovered [from his lengthy injury], we're focused on extending his contract and he's enthusiastic about remaining, while we're completely committed to doing everything necessary to ensure his stay.

"He's currently resolving some personal and professional affairs and once completed, we'll be able to formally announce his continuation with our club."
