Frenkie de Jong's Knee Injury: Latest Recovery Breakthrough and Expected Comeback Timeline

Frenkie de Jong's Knee Injury: Latest Recovery Breakthrough and Expected Comeback Timeline

Barcelona's stunning start to the 2026–27 season has unfolded without Frenkie de Jong, who has been on the sidelines since the World Cup due to a knee injury. However, his absence may be nearing its end, with a November comeback reportedly on the horizon.

While a key figure for the Blaugrana when healthy, De Jong has faced numerous challenges in Catalonia, including several significant injury setbacks, since his move from Ajax in 2019. The Dutch midfielder missed large portions of the 2023–24 season due to a persistent ankle problem and a considerable stretch of last season owing to a hamstring issue.

He has yet to feature this campaign, with Hansi Flick's squad remaining unbeaten across all competitions and devastatingly effective in front of goal. De Jong remains a considerable distance from his first appearance after suffering a knee injury at the World Cup, which deteriorated further after Dutch medical staff urged the midfielder to continue playing through the pain.

What Injury Does Frenkie de Jong Have?

De Jong returned to Catalonia with an MCL tear in his right knee, frustrating Barcelona and reportedly creating friction between club and player when he chose a conservative rehabilitation approach over surgery.

The fact that De Jong remains unavailable suggests the tear was fairly serious, as such an injury can be resolved within weeks when the damage is relatively minor.

Regardless, Barcelona have not felt De Jong's absence this season—particularly in an attacking sense. They have swept aside every opponent in La Liga, claiming all seven victories while netting 31 goals (an extraordinary average of 4.43 per match). Feyenoord were also comfortably dispatched in the Champions League, with the Catalan club adding another five goals to their tally.

When Will Frenkie de Jong Return From Injury?

Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona had expressed doubts about De Jong's chosen recovery path, but Spanish outlet AS reports that the player has been heartened by his rehabilitation progress, prompting a more positive outlook from the club.

The midfielder is set to take the next step in his recovery during the international break, with a return to partial team training pencilled in for Monday, Oct. 5. De Jong could rejoin the full squad later the following week, ahead of Barcelona's La Liga fixture against Getafe on Oct. 10.

Nevertheless, Barça have no plans to rush the Dutchman back into action. He has been out for two and a half months since the full extent of his knee injury became apparent, and the midfielder will spend several weeks on the training pitch building back to peak condition.

Consequently, De Jong is anticipated to remain sidelined throughout October, meaning he will miss at least five more matches, including El Clásico on Oct. 25. Barça also face a trip to Paris Saint-Germain in Matchday 3 of the Champions League.

The La Liga encounter against Alavés on Nov. 1 therefore represents the earliest possible opportunity for De Jong to make his seasonal debut.

Where Frenkie de Jong Fits Into Barcelona's Stacked Midfield

Rodri

De Jong's injury undoubtedly played a role in Barcelona's decision to sign Rodri following the Spaniard's outstanding World Cup, and the former Manchester City midfielder has settled seamlessly into life at Camp Nou.

Even prior to Rodri's arrival, Barça were well-equipped to handle De Jong's absence. Pedri was in fine form for much of 2025–26, Gavi has returned to full fitness, and Marc Bernal has looked entirely at home at the top level since graduating from La Masia.

Some have raised doubts about whether Rodri and Pedri bring out the best in each other when paired together, despite their individual quality, which could open the door for De Jong, upon his return, to forge a productive partnership with the new signing at the base of Flick's midfield.

Given the sheer number of fixtures Barcelona face this season, with deep runs in multiple competitions anticipated, Flick will rely heavily on De Jong. The Dutchman wore the captain's armband on occasion last season, and while the Barcelona manager was unhappy with how De Jong handled his World Cup injury, he stated at the beginning of the new campaign that he shares an "excellent" relationship with the 29-year-old.

"For me, he's an important player because he has immense quality and can contribute a great deal to the team," Flick also noted.
