Fresh Obstacle Derails Kobbie Mainoo's Potential Manchester United Departure
Manchester United's historic streak of featuring an academy product in every matchday squad for 87 consecutive years could potentially block Kobbie Mainoo's hopes of securing a January loan move, according to recent reports.
Mainoo had sought a summer loan departure from United following limited playing time under Ruben Amorim, with the 20-year-old midfielder receiving only 113 Premier League minutes spread across five matches this campaign.
With his playing time remaining restricted, Mainoo is anticipated to pursue another exit opportunity during the winter transfer window, though ESPN suggests his academy background might actually hinder his departure chances.
United have maintained their tradition of including at least one homegrown player in every matchday squad for 87 years, but Amorim's current roster offers few alternatives. The summer transfer of Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea, combined with loan departures for Marcus Rashford and Toby Collyer plus Jonny Evans's retirement, leaves Mainoo as one of only two senior academy products available to Amorim.
Backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton also contributes to this count, while young defender Tyler Fredricson occasionally features in Amorim's matchday selections.
Amorim: I Don't Want to Be Guy That Breaks Tradition

In the recent 2–0 victory against Sunderland prior to the international break, Mainoo served as the sole academy representative in the squad. Allowing the midfielder's departure would intensify pressure on Amorim if he becomes responsible for ending this remarkable 87-year tradition.
"We want to maintain it," Amorim commented regarding the record. "The heritage of Manchester United is founded on youth development. I don't want to be the guy that breaks that."
United are preparing for crucial discussions with Mainoo regarding his squad position as the January window approaches, while striker Joshua Zirkzee will also seek clarity about his role after falling down the hierarchy.
Recent reports suggest Zirkzee has become increasingly dissatisfied with his minimal game time—just 82 minutes across all competitions this season.
Both players face uncertainty regarding their international prospects before next summer's World Cup, as neither Mainoo nor Zirkzee secured selection for their national teams during this international period.
Serie A clubs have shown interest in both players. Napoli remain keen on Mainoo while Zirkzee has attracted attention from Juventus.
