From Unknown to $117 Million: Meet the Midfielder Who Took the Football World by Storm

Ayyoub Bouaddi's move to Manchester City caps an extraordinary few months for the young midfielder, who was largely unknown before a standout World Cup performance with Morocco this summer.

As recently as May, Bouaddi was still registered with FIFA to represent France, the country of his birth, having appeared 27 times across various youth levels from U-16s to U-21s. His switch of international allegiance to Morocco was officially confirmed on May 15, and he appeared on Mohamed Ouahbi's final World Cup squad just 11 days later. On June 13, the football world took notice as Bouaddi dominated the midfield against Brazil.

Lille understandably had no desire to part with a gem on the cusp of stardom, and what felt like endless negotiations ultimately produced a transfer deal worth $117 million (£86 million). The vast majority of that fee is guaranteed, with only a small portion tied to conditional add-ons.

Bouaddi is now the most expensive teenager in Premier League history, as well as the priciest 18-year-old ever purchased. Both records had previously been held by Manchester United defender Leny Yoro following his 2024 move—also from Lille—valued at the equivalent of $80.15 million.

He has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium running through the summer of 2031 and will don the same No. 32 shirt at City that he wore at Lille. The most celebrated former wearer of that number in east Manchester—or anywhere in Manchester, for that matter—is former City and United striker Carlos Tevez.

Morocco reached the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals with a noticeably different squad from 2022, proving that their previous run was no one-off. One of the most striking aspects of Bouaddi's tournament was the maturity and composure he consistently displayed in the center of midfield. That bodes well, given that his primary task at City is to fill the void left by 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri.

City director of football Hugo Viana commented, upon the announcement of the transfer, on the "outstanding football intelligence" Bouaddi already possesses. While the teenager is very much a signing for the present, he is also expected to develop further and reach even greater heights over time.

"We have watched him very, very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City," Viana added. "We are really happy he has joined us and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfill his potential."

Lille manager Davide Ancelotti, regarded as his legendary father's "secret weapon" at Real Madrid and therefore a sharp judge of talent, recently declared that Bouaddi is "going to be one of the best midfielders in Europe for the next 10 years."

Bouaddi's Proven History

Despite the seemingly sudden nature of Bouaddi's World Cup breakthrough and his rapid rise over just a matter of weeks, this is far from a player who has appeared out of nowhere.

Born and raised just outside the Paris region, he was scouted by Lille in France's far north near the Belgian border at the age of 13. The club once missed out on a nine-year-old Raphaël Varane to local rivals Lens, but have built a strong reputation for nurturing talent that in the 21st century alone has launched the careers of Eden Hazard, Lucas Digne, Benjamin Pavard, Yohan Cabaye and Lucas Chevalier, along with the previously mentioned Yoro.

Bouaddi signed his first professional contract with Lille at 15 in the summer of 2023 and made his first-team debut that October, just three days after turning 16. The appearance made him both Lille's youngest-ever player and the youngest in the history of UEFA club competitions—a record later broken by Arsenal's Max Dowman last season.

His Ligue 1 debut followed just days afterward, and Bouaddi had featured in 18 first-team matches for Lille by the end of the 2023–24 season. He was still only 16.

Bouaddi began earning more regular starts once 2024–25 got underway, particularly in the Champions League. He made 36 appearances across all competitions, a figure that rose to 42 in 2025–26. Departing Lille now, Bouaddi has already accumulated 104 appearances at senior club and international level. City are acquiring someone with considerable experience for his age, not merely raw, untested potential.

As was the case on his World Cup debut against Brazil, the grandest stages have never intimidated Bouaddi. On his 17th birthday in October 2024, he started for Lille in the Champions League for the first time, facing Real Madrid, the reigning European champions. Lille handed Los Blancos their first defeat in 36 matches, ending an unbeaten run stretching back nearly nine months. Bouaddi played the full 90 minutes at the heart of midfield against Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga, helping his side both hold their ground and frustrate their illustrious opponents.

'A Very Good Head on His Shoulders'

Bruno Génésio, Lille's manager at the time, described Bouaddi as "a very intelligent young man," echoing Viana's current assessment. "He needs to prove himself, but I don't think there's too much to worry about in that regard with him," Génésio added.

Morocco's Ouahbi pointed to that 2024 display against Real Madrid during the World Cup and called it a "masterpiece," emphasizing that Bouaddi has already demonstrated his quality on the biggest stages.

Football is as much a mental battle as it is a test of physical and technical ability, and even the most gifted players can fall short without the right mentality. Bouaddi's mental strength has underpinned his swift development and given his talent the platform to flourish.

Earlier in 2024, several months before the Real Madrid breakthrough, Mickaël Delestrez—a former Lille youth coach who had worked closely with Bouaddi—told Le Parisien about another defining quality: "He's able to instantly translate what we want to see, has great humility and a unique ability to listen. He absorbs everything the adults can give him."

Génésio, when confirming the day before that Bouaddi would start, highlighted the "very, very good head on his shoulders." He will need that composure now more than ever as he embarks on this exciting new chapter of his career.
