Game-Changing Strategy Could Catapult Wrexham to Promotion Glory

EFL teams are said to be considering a vote on expanding the Championship playoff system to include six clubs, a modification that might affect Wrexham's chances of reaching the Premier League.

Currently, the Championship's top two teams at season's end earn automatic promotion to England's premier division, while the following four clubs battle through playoffs, with the victor claiming the third and final promotion spot.

According to The Guardian, all 72 EFL teams have been invited to a March 5 meeting where they'll vote on whether to include two additional clubs—those finishing seventh and eighth—in the Championship playoff competition.

This revised playoff structure would begin next season if a simple majority of the 72 clubs and all 24 Championship teams approve the modifications already endorsed by the EFL board.

With two additional teams potentially entering the race for Premier League promotion, the playoff structure would require substantial modifications from the current system. The Guardian suggests the league might adopt a format resembling the National League's approach.

Teams finishing third and fourth would receive automatic passage to the semi-final stage. However, clubs placing fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth would compete in elimination matches to determine which two teams complete the semi-final lineup.

The fifth-place finisher would face the eighth-place team, while sixth would meet seventh. The higher-seeded club enjoys home advantage for this single decisive match.

From there, the playoffs would proceed normally, with semi-finals played over two legs, and the victors advancing to the championship match at Wembley Stadium.

Ryan Reynolds

Wrexham's ultimate ambition is reaching the Premier League, which would cap an incredible rise since co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney acquired the club in 2021. During their debut Championship season in over four decades, the Red Dragons have an opportunity to achieve an unprecedented fourth straight promotion.

Phil Parkinson's squad currently occupies sixth place after 31 matches, keeping playoff qualification well within reach. Should the team drop from the top six by season's end in 2025–26 or stumble in the playoffs, their Championship tenure would extend at least another year.

If the proposed playoff expansion becomes reality for 2026–27, Wrexham's promotion prospects would improve significantly. The Red Dragons would then need only to secure a top-eight finish to earn a Premier League opportunity.

Naturally, Parkinson and his players would still need to triumph in the playoffs themselves, but they'll surely appreciate this potential advantage in their remarkable pursuit of competing against clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.
