Alejandro Garnacho took to social media following his Aston Villa debut at the weekend, posting a message widely interpreted as a swipe at his former club Chelsea.
The Argentine joined Aston Villa on a loan deal from the Blues earlier this summer, with an obligation to purchase included should certain conditions — chiefly related to playing time — be fulfilled. Garnacho endured a forgettable single season at Stamford Bridge, failing to make any meaningful impact for Chelsea throughout his time there.
The winger was absent from the starting lineup in each of Chelsea's last five Premier League fixtures last season, and his exit came as little surprise after a campaign in which he managed just one league goal. Garnacho made his Aston Villa bow at the weekend against the Indonesia All-Stars as Unai Emery's squad kicked off their preseason schedule. After the 3–1 win, Garnacho took to social media to mark his debut while appearing to take aim at his former employers.
"First start in three months," Garnacho wrote on Instagram. "Happy to be enjoying football again, 1% every day. Thanks Indonesia!"
Garnacho Known to Throw Jabs at Former Clubs
This isn't the first time Garnacho has departed a club on bad terms, nor the first time he's taken a shot at a former side. The Argentine left Manchester United for Chelsea last summer after admitting he had begun doing "some bad things" toward the end of his spell at Old Trafford.
He took a jab at United back in February, on the eve of Chelsea's Carabao Cup semifinal second leg against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The Blues were chasing a comeback from a 3–2 first-leg deficit, and ahead of the match, Garnacho controversially stated, "Everyone knows how hard it is to play there. If, for example, Manchester United can beat them there, we can do it perfectly." Chelsea ultimately fell 1–0, and the then-21-year-old was met with widespread ridicule from United supporters on social media.
Then in April, it became increasingly evident that few, if any, of Garnacho's former United teammates harbor much goodwill toward him. Chelsea lost 1–0 to the Red Devils in the Premier League, and Luke Shaw shared a photo of himself flooring Garnacho following the victory. Several United players commented on the post in what appeared to be mockery of their former teammate, suggesting lingering animosity between the parties.
Garnacho has a track record of controversy surrounding his club departures, and his recent dig at Chelsea is simply the latest chapter in that story.
It's Now Or Never for Garnacho's Career
Garnacho may enjoy poking fun at former clubs, and stirring controversy appears to be part of his character; however, he is undeniably at a pivotal juncture, and what he produces on the field this season will be decisive in determining whether his career continues its downward trajectory.
United believed they had unearthed a real talent in Garnacho when he burst onto the scene during the 2022–23 campaign, displaying the kind of exceptional potential that many felt would see him develop into a long-term cornerstone of the Red Devils' attack.

Fast forward to today, and the Argentine is set to represent his third club in as many seasons. His final year at United combined with his solitary season at Chelsea yielded the same Premier League goal tally — seven — as his 2023–24 campaign for the Red Devils when he was still a teenager.
Should Garnacho fail to rediscover his best form at Villa this season and the obligation to buy goes untriggered, he risks being pushed out of Europe's top clubs before reaching the age of 25. His underwhelming performances over the past two years have already seen him fall out of contention for Argentina's 2026 World Cup squad. A third consecutive disappointing season could prove truly damaging to his career.
