Gavi Finally Speaks Out After Devastating Injury as Yamal and Barcelona Squad Rally Around Rising Star
A determined Gavi vowed to "return" however many times necessary after undergoing surgery that will sideline the Barcelona midfielder until 2026.
Originally, the strategy was for Gavi—who hasn't played for the team since their Aug. 23 win over Levante—to receive conservative treatment to prevent surgical intervention. However, after persistent pain continued, an operation became unavoidable. Initially, there was optimism that the midfielder could be back in action within four to five weeks.
The timeline extended from weeks to months. According to SPORT, surgeons discovered during the procedure that Gavi's injury was more serious than initially assessed. The midfielder's right meniscus required stitching, leading to an extended rehabilitation period.
Following nearly a year out due to an ACL rupture in Nov. 2023, the 21-year-old faces another prolonged absence from football with complications in the same knee.
Gavi Sends Message of Hope to Barcelona Fans
Multiple Spanish media sources reported that Gavi was devastated when informed about his injury's severity—particularly with the World Cup approaching within a year. Nevertheless, the former Kopa Trophy recipient used social media to share an uplifting message despite the setback.
"Those familiar with me understand that I will return however many times necessary to represent Barça and my supporters until the very end," Gavi posted on Instagram. "A genuine champion isn't forged during successful moments, but in those where he rises after a fall."
"I appreciate all the supportive messages and affection," he concluded.
Barcelona teammates Ronald Araújo, Pedri and Lamine Yamal were photographed visiting Gavi at his hospital bedside on social media.
Team Members, Hansi Flick Respond to Gavi's Setback

Before Barcelona's match against Real Oviedo on Thursday evening, Hansi Flick discussed Gavi's operation and expressed his belief that this experience will benefit the player's long-term career prospects. He also emphasized his complete confidence in Gavi's successful comeback.
"He's a player with an enormous heart," Flick stated. "He's a player filled with passion. He's a player who exists—I won't say sacrifices everything—for this club, but that's his nature. I'm truly pleased to have him in my squad.
"Naturally we're anticipating his return. It's challenging for this team because he brings tremendous quality to us. However, all of us will stand behind him, assist him in regaining his peak form."
Despite his youth, Gavi is recognized as one of Barcelona's dressing room leaders and among the most beloved players on the roster. Nearly the entire Barça squad posted supportive messages on social media for the La Masia product, including a touching message from Yamal.

"My fighter, I'm certain that soon you'll be back performing at your best as usual. Nothing can hold you back. We're all awaiting your return. Stay strong. I care about you," Yamal expressed.
Current teammates weren't the only ones offering support to Gavi. The 2025 Ballon d'Or recipient Ousmane Dembélé also ensured he provided encouraging words to his former Barcelona colleague.
"Much strength little brother," Dembélé shared on an Instagram story. "I hope you heal quickly so we can see you enjoying the game again! Big embrace and I miss you."
Barcelona Decide Against Seeking Gavi Replacement
Gavi will probably remain sidelined until at least Feb. 2026, meaning his injury qualifies as "long term" which could permit Barcelona to transfer part of his wages to sign and register a potential substitute. The club used this approach to register Joan García following Marc-André ter Stegen's injury during the summer.
However, Barcelona aren't considering bringing in any possible Gavi replacements, according to MARCA. With the transfer window currently shut, Barcelona's options are limited. The club could only examine the free agent market for reinforcements.
When Gavi was unavailable after his ACL injury, the club transferred his salary to acquire and register Brazilian forward Vitor Roque at Barcelona. But it seems nothing comparable will occur this time.
Pedri and Frenkie de Jong will remain the starters in Flick's midfield partnership. During Gavi's recovery, the roles of Marc Casadó and Marc Bernal become increasingly vital as the primary backup options for the starting midfield pair.
