Gerrard Makes His Move: The Liverpool Legend He's Desperate to Reunite With

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard confessed he "wouldn't mind" seeing Luis Díaz return to Merseyside, but said he "would love" to have his Bayern Munich teammate Michael Olise instead.

The Colombian winger, who departed Anfield after four seasons to sign with Bayern Munich for $88.1 million (£65.5 million) last summer, is enjoying a stunning debut campaign with the reigning German champions. Díaz has registered 23 goals and 15 assists across 40 appearances, both personal bests in his career.

Such remarkable output has left many Liverpool supporters feeling sour, given that their two high-profile attacking additions, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitiké, have not even matched those numbers combined, due to inconsistent performances and injury setbacks.

Gerrard voiced on TNT Sports what countless Reds fans were already thinking ahead of the Champions League quarterfinal first leg: "I wouldn't mind Díaz back. I'm missing him, I'm missing him."

Those feelings likely intensified after watching Díaz score the opening goal in Bayern's 2–1 victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Díaz Has No Regrets Over His Blockbuster Move to Bayern

Gerrard and Liverpool fans may be longing for Díaz, but the 29-year-old is exactly where he wants to be. "Choosing to join Bayern was the right decision," he said following the club's crucial Champions League triumph.

"I'm truly happy and I enjoy every single game. I feel great, I'm in top shape, and that means I'm ready to contribute to the team."

It comes as little surprise that Díaz has no second thoughts about his move. Beyond his outstanding form, he is in contention to win three trophies this season with Bayern. Vincent Kompany's side are favorites to claim the DFB-Pokal, hold the advantage in their Champions League tie against Los Blancos, and boast a commanding nine-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Liverpool, by contrast, have already fallen short in the Carabao Cup, been knocked out by Manchester City in the FA Cup, are struggling in fifth place in the Premier League, and face title holders Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Gerrard Names Dream Mohamed Salah Replacement

Liverpool were forced to part ways with both Díaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer, and now a year on, they are preparing to lose club legend Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian confirmed his upcoming departure following a turbulent 2025–26 season, marked by a very public rift with manager Arne Slot and the club.

The Reds must now identify who will step into the winger's shoes once the summer transfer window swings open, and few candidates are more compelling than Bayern's Michael Olise, who has accumulated 46 goal contributions this season.

When pressed on whether he would want Olise at Liverpool, Gerrard replied, "All day long. But the issue is, why would he leave Bayern? It's a big club competing for major honors and they are probably the strongest Bayern side we've seen in quite some time.

"He is about to make a huge impact at the World Cup. He looks like a really content young man—settled, in my view—and I don't see him going anywhere. But would I take him at Liverpool? Yes, I would love him."

Indeed, the prospect of Olise, who is tied to Bayern until 2029, departing the club seems remote, even if a powerhouse like Liverpool were to table an enormous offer.
