Ghana and Panama face each other for the very first time in Matchday 1 of the 2026 World Cup group stage, with the two sides clashing in Toronto on Wednesday.
Neither team is considered a favorite in Group L, which is widely expected to be led by either England or Croatia.
Panama is appearing at only its second World Cup, having benefitted from the absence of the three co-host nations during Concacaf qualifying. The Central American side failed to earn a single point in their debut appearance in 2018, yet the squad has made considerable strides over the past eight years.
Former Barcelona forward Thomas Christiansen has been at the helm of Panama for nearly six years, and the team's stability stands in sharp contrast to the turbulence that has surrounded Ghana's build-up to its fifth World Cup.
The Black Stars missed out on the most recent Africa Cup of Nations but managed to navigate their qualifying group for this tournament with relative ease. Nevertheless, they parted ways with Otto Addo in April and have since appointed experienced coach Carlos Queiroz, who is on course to become only the third manager to take charge at five World Cups.
The West African side have dropped as low as 73rd in FIFA's global rankings and have been hit by a string of injury setbacks ahead of the competition.

Panama Makes History in Toronto

Panama was close to being written off on its World Cup debut, but they at least savored that memorable moment against England. In North America, Christiansen's side isn't simply making up the numbers. They are looking to cause some upsets, beginning on Wednesday.
Los Canaleros have been characterized by their consistency and team spirit this decade, with Christiansen instructing his players to press high up the pitch. Panama ranked among the most efficient pressing sides in their confederation throughout qualifying, and that style should prove effective against a Ghana team still searching for an identity under its new head coach.
Queiroz will look for his side to be disciplined and hard to break down, relying on the qualities of a reasonably gifted attack. Even so, Ghana sitting nearly 40 places below Panama in the world rankings tells its own story.
Prediction: Ghana 1–2 Panama

Ghana Predicted Lineup vs. Panama

Ghana had challenged Canada's decision to deny Thomas Partey entry into the country, given that he is currently facing trial in the United Kingdom on seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, to which he has pleaded not guilty. However, the appeal was rejected by a Federal Court judge on Tuesday, ruling him unavailable for selection.
With the original decision standing, Carlos Queiroz will instead rely on the likes of Caleb Yirenkyi, Kwesi Sibo and Elisha Owusu to anchor his midfield.
Experienced forward Jordan Ayew continues to be a key figure in Ghana's squad, while defender Abdul Rahman Baba received an unexpected call-up for the World Cup. The Black Stars are notably without Mohammed Kudus, but they have another attacking threat to lean on in Antoine Semenyo.
Ghana predicted lineup vs. Panama (4-2-3-1): Zigi; Seidu, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah; Sibo, Owusu; Williams, Ayew, Fatawu; Semenyo.

Christiansen will set up with a back three in North America this summer, with Ismael Díaz aiming to carry his impressive Gold Cup form onto the world stage. Díaz won the Golden Boot with six goals, though Panama bowed out at the quarterfinal stage to Honduras in a penalty shootout.
The midfield is anchored by veteran Añibal Godoy, who missed a spot kick in that same shootout. The 36-year-old has been a fixture in Major League Soccer (MLS) since 2015 and currently represents the newly formed San Diego FC. He also captains Panama, having accumulated an impressive 159 international appearances.
Godoy sat out his team's pre-tournament defeat to Brazil, but he is expected to be available for the opening fixture. Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla remains a significant injury concern. He missed both of Panama's warm-up games with a muscle problem, though his return to training on Sunday hints that he could feature for some minutes in Toronto.
Panama predicted lineup vs. Ghana (3-4-3): Mosquera; Fariña, Escobar, Córdoba; Murillo, Harvey, Godoy, Davis; Bárcenas, Fajardo, Díaz.
